Show The Senator Reports To The People Senator Arthur V. Watkins i .i ! The proper education of : nerica's children is to be , apardized in order that we v iy have tanks and guns and f.'e instruments of war. jii-The Office of Education es-nates es-nates that an absolute mini- :.: um of 150,000 tons of steel is ' ;-eded for school construction the first quarter of 1952. That only about three-fourths of ' le per cent of the steel which ill be produced in America's : eel mills in that quarter. The Defense Production Administration Adminis-tration has cut the Office of Education's Ed-ucation's minimum figure to 96,000 tons. This action was ordered even though the nation's na-tion's school enrollment figures are up this fall by 800,000 over last year and will jump another 1,700,000 next year. Many of our children are already al-ready receiving their element ary and high school education in half-day shift schools with sub - standard accommodations. In Fairfax County, Virginia, for example, classes are being held in storage basements, athletic team dressing rooms, partitioned parti-tioned auditorium rooms, auditorium audi-torium stages, the corridors; in quonset huts, fire houses, club houses, churches, and even private pri-vate apartments. It is in that fashion that the children of our generation are being forced to pay for two decades of depression, depres-sion, war, and preparation for war. In the same quarter that much needed steel for school construction construc-tion is being denied, the Defense Production administration plans to authorize 650,000 tons of various kinds of steel for export to Europe and elsewhere in the world. Roughly one-third of this amount, about 213,000 tons, I will go to E C A nations as a i gift from Uncle Sam. Facts and Figures Federal taxes have increased 1200 per cent in the past 12 1 years from approximately five billion dollars a year ot 60 fail-1 lion a year. i The newly enacted Federal employee's pay raise will add $700,000,000 to Uncle Sam's payroll. The national debt of all Euro-peai Euro-peai countries together, not including in-cluding Russia, is estimated at 150 billion dollars. The national na-tional debt of the United States is 257 billion, or more than twice as much as all European nations put together. The Mutual Security Act which donates five billion dollars dol-lars for military aid and one billion for economic aid to various var-ious European, African and Asiatic nations was passed by the House of Representatives after about three hours debate. For every dollar which all other nations give to the International In-ternational Children's Emergency Emer-gency fund the United States donates $2.57. In 1950 the United States was assessed for 39.79 per cent of the cost of the total budget of the United Nations. Barred from Korea Admiral ' Charles Maynard Cooke, USN Retired, has just returned from two years in Formosa where he was head of a technical mission of former army and navy personnel assisting as-sisting the Chinese Nationalist forces. Hp appeared before the Senate, Sen-ate, Internal Security Subcommittee Subcom-mittee to testify regarding our far eastern foreign policy. I was particularly impressed with his story of the failure of the present American administra-j administra-j tion to fulfill their promises of arms aid to the Chinese Nationalists. Nation-alists. I was also impressed with his statement that many thousand Chinese Nationalist troops are immediately available avail-able and desirous of participating participat-ing in the fighting against the Communists in the far east. They are prevented from doing so by the United Nations policy even though their country is a member of the United Nations The reason I am particularly upset by Admiral Cooke's testimony tes-timony is because I have received re-ceived word that many of ovr Utah National Guard men who are trained in artillery warfare, have been used in the infantry unit without proper training. I have asked the Army Chief of Staff, General Collins, for a report re-port on this matter. As soon as his report is available, I will release it. The use of these Chinese forces would help ease the combat com-bat burden on our troops. |
