Show ' TRumfnator In which anyone and everyone is invited lo express their opinion opin-ion about anything and everything every-thing that will help Milford so long as they "don't cuss no one out" that privilege is reserved. We were unpleasantly surprised on Tuesday to read an editorial in the Deseret News blasting our Senator Sen-ator Clif McShane for speaking in the senate chambers in favor of the bill legalizing wagering on horse races. Senator McShane was rep- resenting the people of Beaver County, and honestly voicing their desires. And the desire for legalized legal-ized horse-race wagering is not pe- culiar to Beaver County. It is man- ifesf thruout Southern Utah as a whole and, we believe, the entire state. I i Down here we don't like to be j hypocri'es iif we want to bet on horse races we want to do it legally. Maybe it's different "up north." We have persona knowledge of more than one "Salt-Laker-in-high-places" who maintains a bank account ac-count with booking offices so he can phone Wis bets in, and won't have to take time off from studying study-ing his racing form (which comes to him each day by airmail) to make a personal visit to the booking book-ing office to place a wager. Or perhaps per-haps he doesn't want "o be seen entering a booking office. The Desert News editorial writer taker. a nice crack at Beaver County: Coun-ty: "Perhaps the peace ' officers will continue to do what the people I down there want them to do, in stead of to suppress gambling as required by present state laws," and suggests looking for a judge to 'order gambling "in Beaver county suppressed, or maybe have the gov ernor send some stooges down to isnoop around and try to get the goods on someone. What about your own back yard, Mr. Editorial Writer. Writ-er. Eeavcr County has no prostitutes. prosti-tutes. How many does Salt Lake City have, scattered around among i the beer parlors? Beaver County has no wide open poker games or crap tables. How many does the capital city support? In Beaver County we buy our "spirits" at the state-owned liquor store. How many bootleggers operate on your back streets and in your cheap (flop houses? Maybe the people up ..here don't want to bet on horse races, but we are 'informed: that both Salt Lake and Provo attempted to "steal" the Beaver City racing dates which include July 24th, traditional L. D. S. celebration day. Were you folks planning to take in enough shekels , i'.: ,iT;-V'.'mi.(;3ions to r.ay '.'i." purses? You couldn't pay ushers that way. let alone purses, without a rake-off from mutual betting. And regarding the governor's "snoopers," as you suggested, they would get a lot more "evidence" in Salt Lake and your northern cities than they'd find here. We know that horse race betting flourished openly last year in Millard County during His Excellency's visit to their race meet, and he didn't object.. ob-ject.. And since we can't buy a ticket on our favorite, the betters stand around in groups in front of the paddock and bet with each other. Your editorial tentatively condones betting on golf matches, but damns those who wager on a horse race. What's the difference? Mr. Editorial Writer, you can regulate a man's actions by legislation, legisla-tion, but not his thoughts or de-sires. de-sires. You arc 'jO concerned about legalizing wagering on horse races Tin Utah, we'd like to place a wager and give you excellent odds that a referendum of the people, the in- dividual citizens, of the State of ' Utah would show a vast majority favoring legalized betting on horse races. We don't believe in unpopular unpopu-lar legislation that flatters the prestige of a 'few and tends to make lawbreakers of the individual citizen. citi-zen. We believe in representative legislation, and we consider dt an unfair act when an individual (holding the presumably responsible respon-sible position of editorial writer for a state daily) blasts a senator who honestly represents his constituency constitu-ency and isn't afraid to voice their desires. Why should your opinions carry more weight than his? How many people do you represent? Senator McShane. the people of Milford Valley and Beaver County thank you for bringing our wishes to the attention of the other Senators, Sen-ators, even 'if the Deseret News editorial ed-itorial writer does think you're a .stinker. We elected you. and we still like you. |
