Show Corpora! cited for aiding men in Vietnam Clp. Gary Ellis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ross Ellis of Maple-ton Maple-ton and husband of the former form-er Pat Thorn of Springville, has been awarded the army commendation medal with a "V" device, it was announced this week. The award was made in recognition rec-ognition of "heroism in connection con-nection with military operation against a hostile force in the Corporal Gary Ellis Republic of Vietnam, November Novem-ber 9, 1967." The citation further stated that Ellis distinguished himself him-self for valorous action while serving at Suoi Da with his artillery battery. "Late at night, the Viet Cong launched a furious rocket and mortar barrage on the isolated outpost. Cpl Ellis exposed himself him-self to the bombardment to aid the wounded lying helpless in the compound. He moved through a hail of shrapnel from exploding enemy rounds to the point of heaviest attack and carried the Injured to safety. Repeatedly braving the fierce assault, he remained in the open until he was sure that all casualties had been taken to cover for treatment. Cpl. Ellis' heroic actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army." |
