Show UCWLC conducts monthly meet; UTC head speaks The Utah County Women's Legislative Council met Thursday Thurs-day of last week, under direction direc-tion of Mrs. O. S. Allen, president. presi-dent. Wilson W. Sorenson, president of the Utah Technical College, was the principal speaker. He told the group that in ten years, 50 percent of the people will be engaged in occupations oc-cupations that do not even exist today. He noted that Utah spends more of its tax dollars for education than any other state; also that monies in Utah are allocated 93.01 percent per-cent to academic institutions competing for 12 percent of the jobs against 6.99 percent to technical schools competing for 77 percent of the jobs. He said that it is a paradox that there is more unemployment and yet more job openings now than at any time in the history of the nation. He said the State Board of Education controls UTC and an advisory board from various occupations works with the school in addition to a general advisory committee. Mr. Sorenson pointed out that generally students who attend at-tend a technical training college col-lege are ambitious, dedicated students. He further stated that more money was needed to finance the new school complex com-plex to be built at Orem, where 121 acres are already purchased and where some 70 acres of state-owned land is available for future expansion. The new school, he said will include dormitories to house students. Also at the meeting, a panel of five from the University of Utah department of psychiatry, discussed drugs in Utah. They pointed out that youths use drugs to get a sence of belonging be-longing to their group, to identify iden-tify with their peers, to gain a sense of euphoria or just out of curiosity. |
