Show Letter to the editor School board candidate clarifies talk Last week the combined PTA's of the junior and senior high schools invited each candidate can-didate for the Nebo School Board from Precincts 1 and 3 to speak for five minutes. I welcomed the opportunity and since I was listed to speak first I carefully limited the length of my remarks. My example was not popular and as the evening eve-ning wore on I became aware that either by brevity or another an-other speaker's interpretation of what I had said had left the inference that I would guarantee guaran-tee "security" for all teachers. No doubt my word choice was unfortunate. May I clarify here. Mr. Crandall said he doesn't believe in security. ! Neither do I for the incompetent incompe-tent or the disgruntled. Any well-administered organization quietly and effectively eliminates elimi-nates such personnel. I could only support such a policy in Nebo School District. So we have no quarrel there. But I am fundamentally concerned about good teaching, not bad. Whether we like It or not and for whatever reasons, experienced, ex-perienced, successful teachers in Nebo District are presently wary, disquieted and apprehensive. appre-hensive. Whatever the cause of the atmosphere, it has a negative nega-tive effect and it will not result re-sult in better teaching unless policies are clarified. Good teaching flourishes only in a( climate of academic freedom and high professional stand- , ards and such a climate is the j security I think teachers de- serve. : I would certainly support and i encourage policies that will I "secure" for Nebo District on-j on-j ly the finest teachers.
