Show but the cans disappear before I can really get the goodies sorted out. But I guess that's the price you pay for Sudden Beauty. Lois C. Child P. S. To be continued, I'm afraid, after Halloween; The Moving Finger Strikes Again! I I Open letter Writer decries practice of feSling trees Since my letter regarding the garbage situation was so successful, I am full of confidence confi-dence and white hope, so here I go again : It has come to my attention that in one week's Herald we see pictures of interested and interesting per sons planting trees. In the next week's paper we see pictures of persons, interested in-terested or no, cutting down trees. The trees being felled are invariably the most beau-, tiful trees in town, having just achieved their full growth and become a source of pride and joy to the citizens who care about trees. The excuse for the felling of these beauties is invariably the same: They are too big, too old, they are pushing up the sidewalks. side-walks. I got news for you, whoever who-ever is responsible: I'm getting too big, and too old, and one day before long I shall be pushing push-ing up the daisies; but anybody any-body who is thinking of felling me better think twice. And believe be-lieve me, I am easier to replace re-place than a beautiful, big, old tree. Tnere are places in Springville Spring-ville where the trees have been remover in order to improve sidewalk conditions, and once in a while it has helped. Twice in a while it hasn't. In front of an apartment duplex which I own, this was done; and the sidewalks are no better than they ever were. Did any of you folks ever try to get the City to FIX a sidewalk? I know . . . they'll put in a new one, and charge you for it; but fix an existing one, they will not; they can't charge you for that. I am not taking a pot-shot at the particular administration most of them, including our energetic en-ergetic and astute young mayor, may-or, are doing a fine job. It's almost every administration hits a lull and there's not much they can find to do, so they start cutting down trees. From the pictures in the paper, it almost al-most appears as if the trees planted one week are cut down the next. It's true that only God can make a tree; but He doesn't always plant them where they'll do the most good, and although He keeps them growing, the City keeps cutting. I have spent a good bit of time in Colorado Springs and the Denver area during the past two years, and both of those cities are green and beautiful beau-tiful just like Springville! but with one difference: If a big, beautiful tree gets in the way of the sidewalks out there, they go AROUND it. They really real-ly do. The citizens at first objected, ob-jected, but finally grew accustomed accus-tomed to detouring on foot and bicycle, and they are justifiably proud of their lovely tree-lined streets. I know this can't always al-ways be done; but can't we try it? Please? About the garbage and garbage gar-bage can situation thanks, fellow citizens; you sure "done good!" I not only find a better bet-ter grade of garbage especially es-pecially in Brookside, where it was getting so I could hardly find a thing fit to take home |
