" ' , ' ' : " V j . ku j J Salem man seeks , post of county n commissioner Mel Hanks, Salem businessman business-man and former Salem Mayor, announced his candidacy for the nomination for Utah Coun-i Coun-i ty Commissioner, t w o-y ear term, on the Democratic tick-fcet. tick-fcet. He is a brother of C. Lynn THanks of this city. Mr. Hanks hes been active Jin civic affairs of his community commun-ity for many years. He has Vserved two years on Salem 'City Council, and two four-year four-year terms as the Mayor of Salem. ' Mr. Hanks has been a member mem-ber of the Lions International for twenty-one years, with 100 percent attendance. He has filled all positions in the Lions Club, including Deputy Dis-jtrict Dis-jtrict Governor 1950-51, and District Governor 1952-53. Pre-jvious Pre-jvious to organizing the club in Mel Hanks,, Salem, candidate candi-date for County Commissioner Commission-er ou the Democratic ticket. Salem 1949, he was a member of the Provo club four years, and a member of the Spanish Fork club three years. He is a Key Member and he received the Outstanding Service Award in 1951 for helping organize or-ganize eleven clubs in Utah. He is an International Counselor. Coun-selor. In 1953, Mr. Hanks won the Outstanding Service Award in five of the Western States. A member of the LDS Church, he has served in Ward Sunday School superintenden-cy. superintenden-cy. He was also Stake Clerk for five years. He attended BYU after graduating from the Spahish Fork High School. Owner and operator of his own business, Mel Hanks and Sons in Salem, he has turned the business over to his two sons, Vaud and Shirl. He is married to the former Nelda Hill of Payson and has four married children. Mr. Hanks believes that you can't spend beyond your means, and pledges to the people peo-ple of Utah County that if elected he will stand up for fair and honest government, and to treat everyone equal. |
