Prayer was given by chaplain Dorothy Wiscombe and Grace Norwood led the group in singing sing-ing a couple of pioneer songs, accompanied by Merilyn Tut-tle. Tut-tle. An interesting history was given by Merilyn Tuttle about her grandmother, Elizabeth Partridge Tillotson, who lived in a dugout in the hill beneath where the Manti Temple now stands, when that city was just being settled. There were a lot of Indians in that area, Mrs. Tollotson told of some of the barbaric customs of these people. The lesson was given by Bernice Everett about the first Icelandic Settlement in America. Amer-ica. There is a monument in Spanish Fork dedicated to the first 18 Icelandic people who settled there in 1855. The lesson les-son told of the unusual geographic geo-graphic location of Iceland and of the great literary culture of these people during the 10th to the 13th centuries. It also gave a brief history of these early pioneers who first accepted ac-cepted the Mormon religion and came to Utah with the handcart company and some of their descendants. V e 1 m a Williams brought some slides of Iceland, which were taken by her son. He toured there, when he was returning re-turning from his mission to Denmark. The pictures were beautiful and added a great deal to the lesson. Mrs. Aline Lopez and Mrs. Florence Boyer, county officers offic-ers of the organization, were special . guests. A large crowd was in attendance and the children gave a very interesting program. They had a chorus which sang some pretty songs, with Shelby Hooper and Ann Walker as soloists for the group. A book review on "The Gentle House" by Anna Parrot Par-rot Rose was given by Anna Taylor, and was very much enjoyed en-joyed by all. Refreshments were served to 17 members by hostesses Shirley Graves, Del-la Del-la Lowe and Mrs. Miner. Hostesses for the month of May will be: Nardica Barker, Bark-er, Arline Antonino and Janet Carnesecca. Mabel Hansen was hostess to the Mapleton DUP last week. Captain Senate Menden-hall Menden-hall presided and the group sang "Come, Come Ye Saints," after which Ruby Jensen gave a history of her mother, Francis Fran-cis Evelyn Snow. Mabel Hansen Han-sen read a pioneer poem and Clara Bird Clegg gave the lesson les-son on "The First Icelandic Settlement in America." Hostesses assisting Mrs. Hansen were Ruby Jensen, Nell Wiscombe and Martha Houtz. Aline Worthen daughter daugh-ter of Mrs. Ruby Jensen was a special guest. Mrs. Lewis Johnson had visitors vis-itors from Iosepa last week. Her daughter, Mrs. Norma Ne-bel, Ne-bel, Kim and a -neighbor, Mrs. Shirley Arrieson and her daughter. Retta. The Lady Lions held a lovely spring party at the Mountain Valley Inn last Wednesday evening. The outgoing officers, Erma Hjorth, Inez Harmer, Rea Dickerson and Florence Allan were . presented with gifts by Norma Canto. Clara Gren entered the Utah Valley Hospital, Tuesday, and is expected to have surgery this week. The Mapleton Second Ward had a meat demonstration by Emily Tyler, home demonstration demonstra-tion agent, Tuesday. She gave a lot of interesting and very useful information. Mr. and Mrs. Vance Gividen have gone to California for a week or two. They were accompanied ac-companied by their daughter, Kathleen Nelson and her daughter, Yvonne, of Spanish Fork. Gwen Singleton was hostess host-ess at a bridal shower for Ann Court, Saturday evening. A large crowd of close friends and neighbors came, and presented pre-sented the guest of honor with many beautiful personal gifts. Mr. and Mrs. Collier Allen of Salt Lake City spent Sunday Sun-day afternoon with Mr. and Mrs. Verd Singleton. They came to check on Mrs. Singleton,- who just returned from the hospital last week.
