Show "6" . Devils open season with Dinos at Price hiday Spanish Fork and Payson should furnish plenty of competition. com-petition. Carbon, which is considered con-sidered to be somewhat of a dark horse this year, might enjoy en-joy a season of upsetting the leaders. Win two BY High's small, but talented talent-ed ball handlers gave the rangy ran-gy Springville five a real run for its money here last Friday night before the home club broke away in the final minutes min-utes of the game to win 65-58. The game was a hard fought battle, with the lead .changing hands frequently throughout the last of the second quarter and during the third period. The Red Devils seemed a bit off on their game but came up with some outstanding plays and shots, particularly by Reid, Thorpe and Allred. Thorpe came up with a cool 21 points while Reid garnered 17 and did some nice pass-offs and defensive de-fensive work. Allred hit for 9 and Nielson got 8. Saturday night the Devils had a field night with Granger, and behind the stellar ball handling and rustling and sensational sen-sational shooting of Roger Reid who tanked in 37 points, the offensive thrust of the Devils totaled 97 points. Granger had a most respectable score of 80, largely due to their high percentage per-centage at the foul line. Bird, for the Red Devils, came up with an able 24 point assist. The entire team played heads-up heads-up ball. Play for keeps in the Region 5 basketball race opens Fri-,day Fri-,day night, Jan. 3, with the power-laden Springville Red Devils risking a favored roll at the hands of the upset-minded Carbon Dinos on the Price floor. The Junior Varsity contest con-test gets underway at 6:15 with the important main attraction at-traction at eight. Coach Hal Jensen has one of the most talented fives in the Region and would certainly be rated over all competitors except ex-cept for one factor, if there be one, and that is the inconsistent inconsis-tent defense the Red Devils have employed with previous teams in pre-season play. However, How-ever, with an explosive offense, the Red Devils have fared very well in their practice games to date. ; Tight race Comparing Regional teams in competitive play this year, the battle for the title should be a tight one, with at least four of the five schools given a good chance to come up with upset wins over their opponents. Judging from preseason pre-season records, Provo appears to be in the favored spot for the title. However, the Red Devils, when playing their better bet-ter ball, need not take their hats off to any regional teams, and if they can improve their pattern-style of play and sweep the boards as they are capable of doing with their ta!l boys, the title could easily be rested by the Jensen club.
