Show Former local woman notes 89th birthday A number of Springville relatives rel-atives and friends were in Provo, Sunday, to celebrate the 89th birthday of Mrs. Ena Carrick at an open house in her honor, at the home of a granddaughter, Mrs. Bruce R. Dixon. Mrs. Carrick is a former resident res-ident of Mapleton and later of Springville, residing at First East Second South for some time before going to a Provo rest home. Hosts for the birthday open house were her daughters, Mrs. Sylvester (Florence) Allen of Mapleton; Mrs. Thomas L. (Hannah) Callister of Spanish Span-ish Fork; Mrs. Leo (Helen) Marshbanks of Orem; Mrs. James (Isabel) Nielson of Salt Lake City and a son William Carrick of Provo. Mrs. Carrick arrived in Utah approximately 76 years ago in 1887 after traveling to the United States from Iceland, via England, alone as a child of 13. Her family members had come to Utah Valley the year before and she had to wait until money could be sent for her journey. From then on she worked to earn her own way in various jobs in Spanish Fork including the old pioneer shoe shop there. She worked at a stage coach station in Carbon County and then in Winter Quarter's where she met and married John J. Carrick. They lived there during the terrible mine disaster which took many lives. Mr. Carrick was just going on shift when the explosion ex-plosion occurred They also lived for a time in Alberta, Canada, and later permanently settled in Mapleton, Maple-ton, where Mrs. Carrick was loved and respected for her skill and knowledge as a practical prac-tical nurse and assisted local doctors in the delivery of over 250 babies in that area. Mrs. Ena Carrick's descendants descend-ants now number: 26 grandchildren, grand-children, 98 great grandchildren grandchild-ren and this past summer saw the beginning of a fifth generation gener-ation with a great great grandson, grand-son, David Fisk of Boise, Ida., the great grandchild of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Marchbanks of Orem. |
