Thorn Construction Company has won the first safety award to be presented in Utah by the Associated General Contractors of America as part of a new and intensified safety program underway nationally by AGC. The certificate came from the Washington, D. C, headquarters head-quarters of ACG, and it was presented to Paul A. Thorn, formerly of Springville, by Governor George D. Clyde in a ceremony in the latter' s office. of-fice. The presentation was made on a basis' of the accident prevention pre-vention program maintained by the Thorn Company for the year ending June 30, 1963. This requires the maintaining of certain standards in accident acci-dent prevention established by the national AGC. It includes submission and approval of the company's published safety program; an effective job site safety code; statement by the insurance carrier that generally general-ly recognized safety practices and procedures are being followed; fol-lowed; furnishing evidence of 'safety training for foreman and superintendents; evidences of safety meetings for supervisors super-visors and workmen; and participation par-ticipation in AGC's Disabling Injury Tabulation. Still another part of the criteria cri-teria for making the award has been that the firm has not had more than 20 disabling injuries in-juries per million man hours of exposure. According to the contractor con-tractor organization the frequency fre-quency of disabling injuries on the job sites in the construction construc-tion industry as a whole across the country is more than 30 per million man hours of exposure. ex-posure.
