Show Cedar City tracksters do wellat state meet PROVO - Athletes from Cedar City made an excellent showing in track and field competition com-petition at the Hersheys State Track Meet conducted con-ducted July 10 in Provo. Out of the 433 participants, par-ticipants, Cedar City entrants captured eight first places, four second places, six third places, three fourth places, seven fifth places and one sixth, ' seventh and eighth place each. According to Cedar City Recreation Director Steve Hodson, Cedar kids really did well at the track meet. He said that out of the 42 first place positions, Cedar City kids won eight. "I don't think we can ever do much better than that," added Hodson. The first place winners now are eligible to be selected tocompete at the Hersheys National Track Meet conducted in Charleston W. Vir. Hodson explained that the names of the first place winners will he placed on a graph, along with the names of other first place winners in a district consisting of Hawaii, Calfornia, Nevada, Arizona and Utah, to have times and distances compared to see which of the winners have the most com petit ive times and distances for national competition. If any of the Cedar City kids are selected, Hodson said he'd know by next Tuesday. Hodson added that competition is pretty stiff across the nation. He said that approximately three million youths have participated in the Hersheys meets nationwide. In Utah, about 3.000 participants are estimated. The first place winners from Cedar City are Terri Mackelprang in the f0 and 100 meter dashes; Wendy Weaver in the 400 meter dash; Michael Tolman in the lot) meter dash; Jan McDonald in the 1500 meter run; Bart Smith in the standing long jump; Ricky Guhler in the Softball throw; and l'.art Smith, Kric .Jenkins. Kicky Gubler and Bobby Schexnayder in the 400 meter relay. These first place winners have the opportunity op-portunity to be selected lor national competition in West Virgina. The national track meet will be sponsored by Hersheys Chocolate Corporation, United States Track Hall of Fame and the National Parks and Recreation Association. |
