The July 4 races are not UHRA sanctioned. Larry Pendleton, chairman of the race track committee, indicated that a preliminary check had been made with the association and that the committee was advised that there should be no problem reserving the Memorial Dav date. A scheduled race meet July 4 this year was cancelled by the Wranglers after the imposition of the new fee structure. Haycock suggested that the various groups that use the track get together to survey the problems the city faces and try to come to an understanding. PAROWAN Memorial Day horse racing in Parowan will probably continue as a community tradition, despite a stated intention by members of the Red Hill Wranglers Riding Club to no longer sponsor the races. The Wranglers, while protesting the implementation of a fee by Parowan City Corporation for upkeep at the city-owned city-owned race track, indicated that they may no longer be interested in sponsoring spon-soring horse races at the track. Amid the verbal fireworks at the most recent city council meeting, Norman Evans, vice president of the Red Hill Wranglers said "We wish the city would reconsider the fee which has been imposed. The Wranglers cannot afford the percentage charge on concessions. con-cessions. It's the concessions that carry the races. The admission at the gate doesn't pay the expenses." The city council, upon the recommendation recom-mendation of a recently appointed race track committee, has imposed a fee of $250 and 5 percent of the concessions take. The fee applies to anyone sponsoring a race meet at the track. Stable use fees were also instituted, but those fees are waived during race meets. Revenue from the fees will be used to make improvements at the track and to prevent further deterioration. "We need to find some method to generate the revenue to keep the facility in good condition," Mayor John C. Pendleton said. In related race track business, the council pledged $1,000 to the race track committee in its project to rebuild 150 feet of stable area and add a new jockey's room as part of the new building. The project will cost about $7,000 using volunteer labor. The committee has already secured $4,400 for the project. The committee plans 15 new stables, all with much-improved fire protection. Construction is planned to eliminate much of the upkeep necessary on the current stables, accoridding to Larry Pendleton. In other business, the council Heard a report from Elmer Truman, chairman chair-man of the Parowan Beautification Committee, regarding the building of a "Memory Lane" at the Canyon Park. Truman indicated that trees may be purchased and a plaque erected in honor of whomever the donor selects. An inexpensive source of seedlings has been found. The trees would be ready to plan in about five years, according to Truman. Heard a report from Mayor Pendleton Pen-dleton that the Iron County Commission is interested in a joint project to install curb and gutter in front of the Iron County Rest Home. The council is expected to reply to the county at its next meeting, July 21. Accepted, in executive session, the resignation of Jim Green from the city police force. Advertising for a replacement for Green will begin immediately, according to Lysle Heap city recorder. Mary Gae Evans, secretary of the Wranglers, detailed the work projects and improvements made at the race track by the club. She pointed out that the Wranglers have been sponsoring race meets each Memorial Day and each Fourth of July for the past 30 years and that a number of improvements im-provements have been made by the Wranglers during that period. A second complaint registered by the Wranglers centered around the composition com-position of the race track committee. Norman Evans indicated that the club, in addition to being opposed to the implementation of the fees, was also disturbed that the Wranglers were not represented on the committee. It was suggested by Councilman Gayle Wood that a member of the Wranglers be added to the committee, ( but no action was taken on the 1 suggestion.
