Show Braithwaite Gallery is valuable resource By BRUCE LEE Record Editor "The collection is an invaluable resource for educational and cultural development on campus and in the community," Professor Thomas Leek, Southern Utah State College art curator, has said about the college's permanent art collection. Part of that "invaluable "in-valuable resource" is now on exhibit at the Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery; and indeed it is an educational and cultural resource, one which is available and beckoning to all in the community, one which all the community should take advantage of. Leek also calls the collection "creditable" in a recent news release. But certainly "creditable" is a bit modest. The exhibition includes a portion of almost 600 objects collected by SUSC over the past 83 years. Primarily the works are by 19th and 20th century American artists. Open through August 29, the exhibition includes a wide variety of sculpture, paintings, graphics and textiles. Selections include work by such masters as Benjamin West (American, 1738-1820), James Abbott McNeill Whistler (American, 1834-1903), Winslow Homer (American, 1830-1942) 1830-1942) and Mahonri Young (American, 1877-1957). There are also works of contemporary Americans Ameri-cans such as Maynard Dixon, Daniel M. Mendelowitz, J. Richard Sorby, Richard Haines, Francis DeEr-dely, DeEr-dely, Joseph Mugnaini, Alvin Gittins and Glen Alps, as well as works by SUSC art faculty members. Hours at the Gallery are 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. weekdays, 1 to 7:30 p.m. Saturdays and 1 to 6 p.m. Sundays. |
