Show Cedar City leagues breed fine player By MIKE CANNON Kecord Reporter Cedar City has been known lor many years as one of the finest baseball towns in the State of. Utah. Many outstanding players have worked their way up through the ranks of local youth leagues and have polished their skills in the process. Lance Prestwich is one of those who has benefitted from outstanding out-standing local baseball training. Prestwich, a pitcher and 1979 graduate of Cedar High School, spent the earlier portion of this summer playing semi-pro semi-pro ball in Alaska. He also had a glossy 7-0 record and 2.89 ERA, along with four saves, as a hurler for Dixie College last spring. The chucker was a ultimately give him a crack at the majors. "I loved everything up there except the mosquitos," laughed Prestwich. The 6-loot-3-inch, 168-pound 168-pound fireballef has been approached by the Dodgers, Indians and Phillies. "They told me if I put on some weight I could be a big-league pitcher." Prestwich throws an 87 mile per hour fastball, along with a good curve, slider and change-up. He played in Cedar City leagues until the time that he went to Dixie. He plans to play next year in the sunny south and then look at several four-year schools. The 20 year old's ultimate desire is to play professional baseball, but he hopes to complete his schooling before giving the big time a shot. member of an in-termountain in-termountain region all-star all-star team that played 17 games in Alaska recently. Two teams of NCAA all-stars provided stiff competition for the lntermountain Badgers, a junior college all-star bunch. Prestwich and the Badgers won only one game against the powerful NCAA ,clubs, but it was the traditional "Midnight Sun" game and Prestwich was on the mound lor the upset. "We weren't supposed to win that game," said Prestwich. "They didn't tell us that." The mound ace pitched his team to a 5-2 win in a game that started at 11 p.m., with the sun still shining. Prestwich enjoyed his experience in Alaska and it provided him with training that could |
