Show The Record responds Three years ago, when I moved to Cedar City, I was told the sewage system was working at capacity. Since then, the draft environmental assessment for the Engen Mountain development came out and stated that Cedar City would be able to handle any sewage from that project. ..Recently the City moved forward on annexation of property near the airport. air-port. At that time it was stated that there would be no problem with the added residents using the sewage system. Just what is the current status of our sewage system? Cedar City Manager Joe Melling responded to the question by saying that the sewage system is designed for a 19,000 person capacity. It is, however, suffering from shock loading; Shock loading is an abnormally heavy concentration con-centration of waste in the system, prior to treatment. According to Melling, one day the system will be operating at near capacity, the next day it will be at only 50-60 percent capacity. There is no regularity in the fluctuation. Maximum variance in the system should be around 15 percent. Melling said the City is uncertain as to what is causing the shock loading. He said $7,500 has been budgeted this year to run tests on the system to determine what is causing the concentration con-centration and where it is coming from. "We've got to find out what is shock loading it," said Melling. "We can, with some time, sort out what it is and in time that can be stabilized." There are currently no restrictions on adding hookups to the line because of the shock loading. Melling said the City is working on the assumption that the present system can service 19,000 people, once it can be stabilized. . .The "Record Responds" provides a response column for questions concerning con-cerning any aspect of government or happenings in local cities, Iron County or the State of Utah.
