Show SU thinclads shine Several Southern Utah State College tracksters fared very well at the men's division of the NAIA national track meet held last weekend in Houston, Texas. "We got real great performances from the kids" said SUSC Coach Boyd Adams. Two of the great performers per-formers in the national competition were former Cedar High School standouts. Robert Shirts placed second in the javelin and Keenan Hart finished sixth in the 10,000-meter run and third in the 5000. Shirts unleashed a toss of 235 feet to take home silver medalist honors. The senior chucker was in first place going into the final round of throws. Hart ran a personal best time of 14:34.8 in the 5000-meters to finish a strong third. He knocked over 10 seconds off his regular season fastest time of around 14:45. In the 10,000 Hart recorded a 30:01 clocking to grab the sixth-place finish. He had run a slightly faster time in the lenghty event during the year. Southern Utah also had Adrian Sampson jump 24-6 24-6 in the long-jump, good enough for a sixth-place finish. Sampson's twin brother, Aaron, injured his knee on his second jump and withdrew from competition. His knee was cast while still in Texas. A sixteenth place finish in the grueling marathon was picked-up by Kee Yazzie. The SU ultra-distance ultra-distance man ran a 2:54:30 in very humid and hot conditions. Combined, the exceptional ex-ceptional efforts by the 'Birds resulted in 16 team points, placing them 14th nationally. "Anytime you can take five kids down and do that well it's great" commented com-mented Adams. "We're just real pleased with the season and are looking forward to next year." |
