Show Letters to the editor Honor teachers R. Jenkins, who was an elementary school teacher for 27 years in the Flint, Mich., school system, established the special day to honor teachers. It was first observed nationally in 1979, and the observation has been repeated annually since then on the Thursday before the beginning of summer vacation. Are you planning a Teacher's Day celebration? I hope so. I personally have many good teachers I should pay tribute to both for my own personal education and for the education of my children. If you do, here is a recipe for a good punch. Maybe you, or even your teachers aide, could make some to pay tribute, or make a toast, to your teachers. CRANBERRY ORANGE PUNCH1'1' 2 quarts cranberry juice cocktail J A 1 2 quarts orange juice 1 quart lemon sherbet Mix the two juices together with the sherbet in a punch bowl or large cooking pot until the sherbet is thoroughly melted and mixed in. If you plan to serve it from the punch bowl, you can float several orange slices and some mint leaves on top of the punch as a decoration. This recipe makes about 40 punch-cup punch-cup size servings. Have a good day. Clayton Frehner Editor; If you were in charge of choosing teachers, what qualities would you look lor? Patience, kindness, understanding? un-derstanding? The ability to make a subject interesting? Enthusiasm for the job? Teaching is one of the most demanding professions. Teachers must get to know and work closely with students, parents, other teachers and school administrators. They are the bridge that bring these people together. Most importantly, teachers are responsible for giving young people both information and a source of personal per-sonal discipline that will enable them to live happy lives. Good teachers are worth their weight in gold. Today will be celebrated as Teachers Day in many communities.
