Show Peace requires united dedication As Memorial Day 1981 ends it is a good time to. stop and think about the many sacrifices that have been given by so many to ensure our freedom and keep our land safe for our children. It is also a time to reflect upon the growing problems in the world and realize that only those who have died are free from the threat of war, even in the face of so much sacrifice. Why must there be war? It seems that war is not only a problem of nations but also of individuals. It is reaching for power and wealth at the expense of neighbors and friends; it is greed, envy and lust all combined in a national and world maelstrom of events which leaves the world tottering on the brink of disaster. As James said, "From whence come wars and fighting among you, come they not hence even from the lusts which war in your members?" The question then becomes how can we expect our nations and governments to reflect anything except the problems and hates of the people. Real peace and the end of war will only come when each individual person begins to restrain and" overcome the "lusts which war in (his) members" and seeks peace with himself and his neighbors. Only then will those who gave "their last full measure of devotion that this nation might live" be adequately remembered. We must dedicate ourselves to achieving peace among ourselves and all mankind . . . Memorial Day 1981. |
