Show Iron County residents seeking positive goals If we have learned anything the past few weeks it is that all of us here in Iron County desire basically the same things. We all desire progressive county and city governments committed to encouraging good economic development. We all desire good schools for our children and a good environment in whch to raise our families. We are all committed to the principles of good government which have been the strengths of our government. There is a strong tapestry of social involvement intertwined in the lifestyle of people in Iron County, involvement in church, schools and civic events. We would hope that this will spill over into greater involvement in city and county government. govern-ment. However, many times the only people to a city council meeting are those who have some problem or grievance. If we would involve ourselves in the entire process whenever we have a chance then many of those problems and concerns might never arise. If we will involve ourselves in the progress of our cities and county we will be amazed at what we can achieve together. Yet, we must be willing to give up a portion of our own special interest to see the whole progress. Social progress moves forward day by day, often times without us really realizing how much things are changing. Part of that change comes through learning from our mistakes and in using our experience, however painful, to leave their marks, not regretfully, but gracefully, as we attempt to go forward. However, growth and progress by their very nature require some criticism. John Homer Miller wrote: "Your size is determined by the manner in which you take criticism. The moment he is criticized the little person flies to his own self-defense. He seeks to justify himself. He shows resentment. He does not even consider whether the criticism is intended to be hurtful or helpful. "The big person, on the other hand, listens to all kinds of criticism attentively, appreciatively and understanding. He expects it. He knows he cannot possibly please everybody all the time. He is the kind of person who, if he did please everybody all the time, would think something was wrong with him. "It is said that even Jupiter cannot please everybody. In conversations I have listened to, even God comes in for more than his share of criticism. He is about the most criticized person in the universe." We here at the Record expect criticism. We-hope We-hope that we will accept the comments of the past few weeks with the result of making the paper more responsive to the needs and wishes of our readers. At the same time we look upon the paper as a public trust, as the one place where diverse ideas can be heard, and shared and hopefully out of that sharing will emerge a consensus of opinion which will help the area progress and give some guidance and help to our elected officials. We invite everyone in the area to unite together for the benefit of all, to work together as a critizenry, as city councils and as a county commission for the progress of the whole area. Why? Because we really all desire the same things. |
