Dear Brother:- For several weeks ptist I have been receiving receiv-ing the regular visits of a cheerful little friend from home named the Washington Wash-ington COUNTY NEWS. I appreciate the hits of news it; contains from all parts of my Dixie home, and feel very srrateful for yout kindness in sending it tome. I am thankful that, at last, our count v has given birth to such a valuable valu-able and necessary addition. I have often wished that the County could have such an enterprise. Such a medium med-ium I believe to be one of the essential factors which go to make up a County. I hope your little paper has come to stay. I like your fairmindedness, and feel assured that when people find- out your real intentions they will give you more encouragement. At present I can only offer my best wishes for your success. suc-cess. My labors for the past twenty months have been confined strictly to the dissemination dis-semination of the everlasting truth. I am now using all my time and talent in the cause of humanity, trying to got people to believe in God and obey His word. 1 am enjoying this work very much. In doing good to others I have a peace and consolation of mind that could not be gained in any other way. This, the Southwestern States Mission, Mis-sion, embraces the States of Kansas, Arkansas, and Texas, and the Indian and Oklahoma Territories, and is presided pre-sided over by Elder Wm. T. Jack. We have a force of about 150 Elders at work like beavers in the various Conferences embraced in the mission, which number nine. This, the North Texas Conference, Con-ference, litis fourteen Elders laboring in its counties. On the Kith nit. outnumbers out-numbers were increased by the arrival of two Dixie boys, Chas. Iliggins from St. George and Frank Leavitt from Bur.kerville. I was glad to welcome them into our ranks. Any one from Washington County seems like one of the family. Elder Higgins was placed in Dallas, the metropolis of the State. Elder Leavitt commenced his labors in Coltin county with Anna as his standing stand-ing address. Our labors as ambassadors of Christ are very satisfactory to us. We are finding a few honest who are accepting our testimony, and making a good impression im-pression on the thinking classes where-ever where-ever we go. Our labors are not always pleasant, but the little kicks and cuffs only serve to polish us up, like the sculptors hammer perfects the -image. Our missionaries are gaining experiences ex-periences that in the future will b& of great value to them, in helping- to ivield the destiny of this nation, and the whole world. The preaching of the gospel of the Lord is a wonderful work and full of comfort to those who are willing to make enough sacrifice to gain a testimony of it. I have not had one sick day since leaving home, and have been well treated with one or two exceptions. The climate of Texas is similar to that of Washington County. I am right at home here, especially when baked sweet potatoes are put on the table. I am not traveling at present but am stationed at Royse, Rockwall County, as Secretary of the Conference, to which place please change the address on my paper. May you be prospered in the publication publi-cation of your paper, and may it grow and become appreciated among the people as it deserves. May peace and prosperity prevail in all the hamlets of the County. Your Bro. in Truth, J. L. Workman, Royse, Texas, December 15, 1S98. |
