Show Dixie's Chances For Title Rated As Slim A peek at the Dixie high school basketball squad on the eve of the 1942 campaign casts more shadows than a cloud on the horizon hor-izon in sunny California. The 1941 champions enter the race this year with nothing more than a reputation to uphold. This is a gang of youngsters that will put up a good fight, long before they will throw the towel in. ' The boys are young and very inexperienced, inex-perienced, with about as much combined height as is required to peek in a basement window. Their combined ages would still make many a man feel that the month of June should still produce him a bride. Experience Lacking Victor Frei, captain of the team is the only member of last year's squad playing. He plays guard, and as a. reserve last year saw very little action. Robert Fawcett, Stafford Snow and Wesley Wes-ley Whitehead, the other three guards are playing their first year. Harold Atkin and ElMyrrh Cox are working at the Center position. posi-tion. These boys along with Kent Reber, Leon Watson, Ralph Hafen and Ronald McArthur at the forward for-ward posts are also playing their first year. At the Woodward high under Coach Reed Blake the boys received valuable instruction, but as the Woodward has no league to play in, the much-needed league experience, when they really play for keeps, is lacking. Schedule A Nightmare Friday night the 9th, the boys face the powerful Cedar City high in the opener. A tough break for any team. The following night they meet Valley high from Ord-erville. Ord-erville. The following week end Dixie plays Kanab and Hurricane on successive nights to further make the first two week ends important preludes. Practice Season Disastrous The practice season was the worst in Dixie history (for years at least). Following is a list of games played and scores: Moapa Valley 17, Dixie 34; Lincoln county high 17, Dixie 31; Beaver 20, Dixie 19; Murray 31, Dixie 19; Cyprus 25, Dixie 23; Beaver 34, Dixie 19; Moapa Valley Val-ley 29, Dixie 33; Payson 32, Dixie 39; Tropic 15, Dixie 79; Lincoln county high 19, Dixie 29. The Dixie league this year will be one of the strongest in the state. Cedar City and Hurricane with veteran well-coached squads should fight it out for the championship. cham-pionship. Enterprise, Kanab and Parowan may forge, into the lead and win, as they are capable of doing just that. From pre-season dope, Dixie and Orderville should at least have a lot of fun, and from the talk among the Dixie squad they will go after the bunting bunt-ing for all they are worth and when the smoke clears away they may even be found in the win column. They say that teams that won't be beat can't be beat and every team in the league will go into action this week end with just that thought in their hearts. Here's hoping for one fine season, sea-son, and may the best team go to the bright lights when the tournament tourn-ament rolls around in March. Dixie Roster ji u I I -s V.
