Show Dixie College Graduates Make Fine Records In Schools, Business Fields By M. J. MILES During the past week reports have been received of outstanding achievements of several recent graduates from the Division of Physical Science and Mathematics al Dixie junior college. Raymond Farnsworth, son of Mrs. Bart Farnsworth of Enterprise, Enter-prise, has just finished his Ph.D. degree at Ohio State university. His research at Ohio State has enabled him to increase sugar beet production pro-duction as much as 15 tons per acre in some instances. As a result of this work he has traveled throughout the middle west lecturing lec-turing for sugar companies, and he has just accepted a position with the Paulding Sugar company as their agronomist. He will officially of-ficially receive his Doctor's degree de-gree in June. Mr. Farnsworth has published several research papers. George Jarvis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Brigham Jarvis Jr., has been doing graduate work on a Wisconsin Wis-consin alumni research foundation scholarship at the university of Wisconsin. He has completed the requirements for the Ph. D. degree in Physics. Mr. Jarvis and the head of the Physics Department at the University of Wisconsin .were called to Massachusetts Institute of Technology to do research work connected with the defense pro-am, and the nature of their work cannot, therefore, be revealed. re-vealed. Prior to leaving Wisconsin, Mr. Jarvis had published research papers dealing with isotopes of nickel. Four graduates are now making enviable records at the University of Southern California in the School of Dentistry. Clayton Prince, son of Mr. and Mrs. Antone Prince is in his second sec-ond year in the school of dentistry. dentis-try. At the close of the first semester se-mester he had a grade average of 94.3 which was the highest in his class. Rulon Whitehead, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Whitehead is also in his second year of dentistry at the University, of Southern California. At the close of the first semester his average was 92.2 which was second highest in the class. Ivan Hyatt, son of Dr. and Mrs. Gilbert Hyatt is in his third year in the same school of dentistry and has an enviable record. Fae Terry, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Terry of Rockville, is ..in her fourth year at U.S.C. school of dentistry. She has" been outstanding in each of her four years, and is reported by the dean to be the best lady student that the school has ever had. Del Roy Isom of Hurricane is completing his work for the M.A. degree at the University of Utah. He has been offered a teaching fellowship in chemistry and is reported to be doing outstanding work. Viron Jones, son of Mrs. A. W. Augason, is also on . a Teaching Fellowship at the University of Utah in the Department of Chemistry. Chem-istry. He is reported to be doing excellent work in his research on pyrophoric iron. J. E. Seegmiller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dee Seegmiller, is a junior at the University of Utah, He is assisting as-sisting Dr. Titus in the Quantitative Quantita-tive Analysis Laboratory. This type of assistance has usually been given to graduate students, and is regarded by those who understand the nature of the work to be a signal recognition of Mr. Seeg-miller's Seeg-miller's ability. The above is not intended as a complete list of graduates that are succeeding, but simply represents repre-sents those whose achievements have been recently called to the attention of the director of the division of physical science and mathematics at Dixie junior college. col-lege. Incidentally, the National Guard took five sergeants out of the Physical science division when they left last week. These men are Elmer Pickett, Paul Crosby, Glade Wittwer,' Garth Cottam, and Evan Pickett. Word has been received re-ceived that Garth Cottam was recently re-cently transferred to the Army Air Corps. |
