Show Dixie Wins Sixth Place in State Tournament Speed and Skill of Dixie 'Midgets' Again Draws Acclaim of Tourney Fans The Dixie high school basketball team won sixth place in the tournament tourn-ament held last week at Salt Lake City. They were defeated in the final game Saturday night by a rangy Box Elder crew 26-35, the Bees taking third place. Dixie's best ball was displayed against Davis high Friday night, though the team lost to the Darts 23-29. The game was one of the most thrilling of the entire tournament, tourna-ment, the two . teams matching basket for basket during most of the game. It was only in the final moments that Davis got a two-point lead, after which they froze the. ball, and Dixie -could do nothing about it. This was the second game of the tourney the Darts had won through stalling. Saturday night the Box Elder team, a classy outfit, was just too tall for the Flyers. Dixie matched the Bees on the floor, but could not stop the tip-in shots. Dixie's shooting was their poorest of the season, too. After trimming Altamont in (Continued on Page A) State Tournament (Continued from first page) handy style Wednesday nighty the Flyers upset the champion b. high team of the Alpine district Thursday night 35-33. The B. Y. featured their tall 6 foot 7 inch center, Don Hansen. The Flyeis were able to hold him down after the first quarter and soon took a comfortable lead. After the game was in the bag for Dixie, B Y. started a late fourth quarter rally, but the best they could do was to pull within two points of the Dixie team. The obtaining of sixth place was a real triumph for Coach Hafen and his team this year. Not being given an outside to cop the division divi-sion title at the opening of the season, they upset the dopesters to win after a hectic season. They also did better in tournament tourna-ment play than most experts expected ex-pected them to do. Not .that the team was not in trying all the time, for they were the best fighting team of. the tourney; but their size and experience was against them. Their success was due, in large part, to the speed of the boys and their effective coaching coach-ing by Lee Hafen. Provo high school won the state championship against those same Davis Darts that defeated Dixie, Davis taking second place. Jordan, considered by many as, the best team in the tournament, had to be content with fourth place, having been upset by Box Elder on the second night. Dixie placed one man on the second all-tourney team, one on the third, and four received honorable honor-able mention. : Wendell Tobler won the guard, position on the second team, and LaGrande Frei was " placed as a forward oin the third team. Receiving Re-ceiving honorable mention were: Kay Hafen, forward; Junior Neil-son, Neil-son, forward; Arlo Hafen, center; and Herbert Pitchforth, guard. This is a very good record for the Dixie team, as these were the only players to see regular action. It also indicates the excellent team work of the boys. |
