Show Seen and Heard 'Round the Town By EDGAR Basketball Sidelights The opening round of basketball in the Dixie district showed only a little of the strength of the teams since Hurricane and Cedar, which are rated two of the teams to beat, didn't play. Dixie romped to an easy win over Parowan. The Dixie team showed consid-erable consid-erable potential strength and should be one of Coach Lee Ilafen's good teams. They were ragged in their play, but showed plenty of potential power. In Russell Neilson, Norman Hafen and Darrel Hafen, Lee has real material around which to build his team. Russell looked mighty good on his ball handling and ball-hawking. He handles the ball well with either hand, is fast and a good shot. While smaller than the other two, he is able to put a lot of space under his feet when he gets off the floor and will surprise many of the opposing players. Norman looked mighty good against Parowan and should be one of Lee's best players. play-ers. Darrel was one of Lee's best players last year and with added height and experience should add to his laurels this year. . . . This team will be one of the tallest teams that Lee has had since I have been in this country. Even though tall, they are still quite fast. . . . This Friday Cedar comes to Dixie; Hurricane plays at Enterprise and then on Saturday Satur-day plays Parowan Parowan at Hurricane. This should give a little insight as to the strength of most of the teams. Kanab also plays at Parowan on Friday and Cedar on Saturday. Hurricane Bank Ads The State Bank of Hurricane started the new year off with the first of a series of ads which are to run each week in the News during the year of 1944. This series of ads was prepared by the American Bankers' association for banks similar to the State Bank of Hurricane and embodies many interesting items and useful information. in-formation. You are invited to read these ads as they appear each week in the News. Virgin River Project I am glad to see that Governor Herbert B. Maw, and members of his official family, were in St. George this past week checking on the various irrigation projects in this county. These projects are vital to us and could be a major help in providing work for our boys when they return from the armed services. The Virgin river project in particular, would provide pro-vide enough additional land for our farmers that they could employ em-ploy our youth and in addition would give our farmers enough land to work with that they would be assured of an income that would provide for their families fami-lies under normal conditions. We mustn't let down on these projects. proj-ects. Along with the Enterprise road, we should keep working and pushing these projects all the time. . . . The Rotary club has appointed a committee to write Governor Maw regarding the Enterprise En-terprise road. It seems to me that it would be well for other groups to likewise. This 'N That I am told that Hy Thomas declared once that he thought the News office had the largest ratio of "physical weaklings" of any place in St. George. Of the News staff Hazel, Mabel, Archie Joe and myself it looks to me like Hazel would be the only one of the group that could resent that statement! state-ment! . . . Joe is slated to let Uncle Sam look him over this week end. We will see what Uncle Sam has to say about it. At that, Clark Blake says they told them when the group he was were examined, that all they had to be was "warm" . . . Hazel and I are going to attend the State Press association meeting in Salt Lake this week end. We have been advised to bring along our "long-handled" underwear. I have an overcoat that I bought just before I came to Dixie. About once or twice a year I get it out and dust if off when I am taking trips like this one into the cold country. Otherwise I wear the same clothes that I do most of the year, and I think that applies to most 61 the people who live in Dixie. Especially those who do not work outside. . . . It's kind'a snappy nights and mornings now, but these sunshiny days are sure grand. . . . That last wasn't to make you people who are away from Dixie homesick, home-sick, just to remind you of the kind of weather we have down this-a-way.
