Show Stake Quarterly Conference Held Here Sunday Speakers Stress Value of Religious Training Under Wartime Conditions The value of education and training, train-ing, personal development through adherence to vital religious and constitutional principles of life, and success in work of church organizations through observance of systematic methods; and stability, sta-bility, in personal life through adherence ad-herence to the laws of right-ousness right-ousness and justice, were among the points stressed during quarterly quar-terly conference sessions held in the St. George stake Tabernacle Saturday evening and Sunday, Jan. 8 and 9. Church authorities attending were Stephen L. Richards Rich-ards of the Council of Twelve Apostles, and Robert L. Judd of the Church Welfare organization, both from Salt Lake City. Special Union Meeting; On Saturday evening the Relief Society held a special Union meeting meet-ing where instructions were given to the block teachers and other departmental work was conducted. A large attendance was noted at this meeting and special music was provided along with addresses ad-dresses by stake workers under the direction of Mrs. Joseph T. Atkin, stake president. Priesthood quorums met Saturday Sat-urday evening in the assembly hall of the Tabernacle, where a demonstration of the functioning of the Melchizidek priesthood committees was presented by Wendell Bayles and his committee from the Center ward, and a specially spe-cially arranged program was conducted con-ducted for the Aaronic priesthood priest-hood groups under the leadership of B. Glen Smith. Apostle Richards Rich-ards addressed the adult group and Mr. Judd spoke to the junior priesthood quorums at the conclusion con-clusion of their special programs. Along with general instructions to the stake and ward welfare (Continued on page three) St. George Conference (Continued from first page) committees, Director Judd expressed ex-pressed appreciation for what has been done in this stake and in the Virgin river region as indicated indi-cated by the reports submitted at the meeting and at the stake storehouse which he visited. This special Welfare session was held at 9:30 a. m., Sunday. General sessions were held Sunday Sun-day at 10:30 a. m., 2:30 p. m., and 7:30 p. m., the stake Tabernacle being packed to capacity for the morning and afternoon meetings, with' every ward in the stake represented. At these sessions special spe-cial recognition was given the soldier boys at home on leaves and furloughs, Capt. George R. Olds, recently returned from the theatre of war in Europe responding with remarks in the forenoon session; TCpl. Keith Wallace, and SSgt. Wendell Motter speaking before the afternoon meeting. Other soldiers sol-diers present were Pvt. Keith Tobler, Tob-ler, Sgt. Arnold Larson, and SSgt. Creston Woodard. Sgt. Larson is home from three years service in the Canal Zone. A mission mis-sion report was also made by Clarence Bundy of Mt. Trumbull ward, telling of his work in the north central states and Canada. Music for General Session .' , Music for the general sessions was provided by the Dixie junior college mixed chorus under direction direc-tion of Jos. W. McAllister, stake chorister, with Paul Thompson and Janice Merrill accompanists. Several numbers from the recently presented oratorio, "The Nativity" were included, with solos by Mrs. Pratt Miles, Mrs. Mack Jackson, Jay Huntsman and Ray Garner, and a trio by Mr. Garner, B. Glen Smith and Leland Lamoreaux. There was also the congregational singing of church hymns. Special awards were made to Priesthood quorums during the Sunday forenoon session and general gen-eral and stake authorities were presented for the sustaining vote of the members at the afternoon session. In their addresses, Apostle Richards, Director Judd, Pres. Harold S. Snow and his counselors, coun-selors, Vernon Worthen and Vivian Viv-ian J. Frei, gave special thought to the world at war, stressing the value of national religious and ethical ideals, the great importance impor-tance of proper training and adherence ad-herence to righteous principles if the world is to benefit from this world struggle for human freedom. free-dom. Praise was given to the youth of American and to all who are fighting to preserve the ideals of Christianity as adopted in the American way of life, and prayers were offered for the speedy return of peace to the world and of the American youth , to their homes. |
