Since c; Ume. a decision was reached to send ber of paintings and have them in hools for six weeks at a time. ""ng the summer, the schools par ticipating in the program attended workshops to learn about the program. It is a trial program set up by the University Univer-sity of Utah Fine Arts. According to Pat Merkley, teacher at Discovery', this program pro-gram is set up through Sue McCoy who is head of the Utah Museum of Fine Arts. The Traveling Art Show contains pieces from very contemporary to very modern. There are many forms, techniques, techni-ques, and types of art brought into the schools. Exhibits are donated by the owners. This program is totally funded by the University of Utah Art Museum, said Mrs. Merkley. "It is trying to get some v ' , I V - . "J i ;" .) i I ( : - Jl I art out into the rural areas." Mrs. Merkley said some of the paintings pain-tings are worth $2,000 alone. She said some of the artists allow their paintings to be displayed in hopes it will help them sell. Teachers at the school are given a packet of materials which they can use in the classroom. They have teaching materials to enable them to use the paintings pain-tings in their classwork. The paintings are hung in the hall for a while and then can be taken into the classrooms for the teachers to use in teaching. Mrs. Merkley said one of the reasons for this is, "so the kids can have a direct exposure to art to understand it and see what the artist was doing." There are different activities for the students to do with art on their own level. This Traveling Art Show is coordinated with their own art books. Mrs. Merkley said, "If they can see what they are doing then they have a better bet-ter chance of doing it." "If a child lives with a painting they learn to understand it," Mrs. Merkley said. Instead of saying they don't like it, they learn to understand what it is about the painting that they don't like. -'- r j -: ' I L ' "There's nothing wrong in liking or not liking a painting. It's understanding why you do or don't," said Mrs. Merkley. The school also has some local artists participate in their art program. "This program has allowed children an opportunity they may never have had," said Mrs. Merkley. At the end of the year the program will be evaluated once again to see if they want to continue it. The paintings are on display for the public to view as well as the students. They are located at Discovery and Ashley Elementaries. ' !
