Show Jnercipioymeirrf up 2 during January The unemployment rate in the Uintah asin jumped to 11.1 percent during anuary, according to recent figures leased by Utah Job Service. January's increase in unemployment i substantially over December's mark J 99 percent unemployment even lough January and February are peak mes of the year for numbers of nemployed. Unemployment for the asin in January last year was substan-ally substan-ally lower, 4.2 percent. Ray Sergeant, Utah Job Service, state flice, said sustained cutbacks in oil and ;as industries and no sufficient alter-ate alter-ate activity to compensate is the major ause of the high unemployent in the rea. Although the nation's unemployment ate declined some during January, the Jlah figure was steady at 8.6 percent. Sergeant said the unemployment situa tion in the Uintah Basin is similar to the southeastern region of the state. Unemployment in that major coal min- ing area of the state went from 11.1 percent per-cent to 13.2 percent in January. Mining and extraction industries are . ..usually the last major industries to be ' impacted by unemployment, Sergeant said. "Construction carried the blunt to start with, and now it's effecting mining." Unemployment state-wide was held stable because of an exceptionally good ski season helping on the Wasatch Front. Another reason for the increase in unemployment locally is that new jobs are not being generated to meet the increasing in-creasing labor force. "Unless new jobs are created, there will only be a slow decline in unemployment," unemploy-ment," Sergeant said. |
