Show Hatch says budget cuts will not slow CUP completion date Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah,' said last week that while the Pesident's budget plan will reduce some allocations to the , Central Utah Project (CUP), they will . not affect tme final completion date of the project. "It's difficult to tell from the limited . information we've received just exactly what kinds of cuts will come in the program, but I do not believe the Jensen Unit was cut," Hatch said. "The Bonneville Unit will probably i be cut by $4 million in 1982 but will receive no cuts from 1983 to 1986. The Upalco Unit will not be cut in 1982, but will be cut by $10 million from 1983 to 1986. "The net effect of these cuts will cause a delay of three to four months, but this should not affect the final completion date, according to the Department of Interior," Hatch said. "Most of the budget cuts will be absorbed by irrigation and recreation. However, the 1982 irrigation and recreation budget will not absorb all of the cuts, so the cuts to the big projects had to be made. "Because of cuts in Section 8 of the Upper Colorado River Storage Project, which provides for recreation, fish and wildlife facilities, some of the Central Utah Project may be delayed those parts that deal with recreation, fish and wildlife. "The president's budget program asks every sector in the economy to give a little bit to spread the hurt around. Although we're still expecting more information dealing with the CUP specifically, I don't know how the White House could have done a better job of recommendation to all of us in this country, and I believe we should support sup-port the President," Hatch said. |
