Show Assistance for qualifying elderly Hardships for elderly and fix low-income low-income individuals are becoming alarmingly severe. Twenty-five percent per-cent of a person's income used to take care of all shelter needs, including energy costs. Currently, the low-income low-income individuals are spending 30 to 40 percent of their gross income for direct fuel costs such as hot water and space heating. Projected figures reveal they may be spending as much as 50 percent of their available dollars on energy alone this winter. The major goal of the Weatherization Assistance Program is to enable elderly and low-income individuals and families to participate in energy conservation programs designed to lessen the impact of the high cost of energy by reducing consumption of fuel and increasing thermal efficiency. An allowance of $500 per home can be used for those eligible under the Federal low-income guidelines. This program will check homes for the elderly and low-income families for energy loss and replace or add weatherstripping around doors and windows, calk outside cracks, skirt mobile homes, add storm windows and insulate pipes and items to improve attic ventilation. Elderly and low-income families interested in having their homes weatherized should contact Uintah Basin Association of Governments (Harvey Weiss) in Roosevelt, Utah 84066, telephone 722-4518. |
