Show The program is known as Vernal Boys' Baseball, but in some cases it probably should be known as Vernal Fathers' (or Mothers') Baseball. The sport is supposed to be for the boys only, but some fathers and mothers have different ideas. The game of baseball is only a game, but to some' people it is a matter of life and death. A Vernal youngster was taken out of the Bronco League championship game between Vernal and Springville, Thursday, just before the top of the seventh inning was to begin. Apparently Ap-parently he wasn't take out of the game by his coach. The game of baseball is a team event and the players are supposed sup-posed to stay in the game until the end of the encounter unless a substitute is sent in to replace him. Instead of having the Vernal Boys' Baseball Program there should be a Vernal Fathers' Baseball Program. Many of the fathers wish they could be out there playing baseball when they are watching their sons on the field. By having a Vernal Father's Baseball Program they would have their wish come true. There would be no need for coaches on the teams in the Vernal Fathers' Baseball Program because most of the fathers figure they know more about coaching a baseball team than a coach does. Trying to decide who would play what position wouldn't be too much of a problem because there would be only two positions and that would be pitcher pit-cher and catcher. It wouldn't matter that there weren't any outfielders and infielders. Most fathers think their kid is the best pitcher on the team so every father would want to be the hurler on the squad. The boys would be the fans in the stands and they would scream, yell, threaten, and urge their fathers on to victory. The fathers could relive their baseball experiences of their youth by playing the game once again, and their sons could spend their youth being bench warmers. These comments could also be directed to mothers as well. Vernal's A team pocketed first place ir. the Pony District Tournament in Vernal. Thursday. Two of the top sluggers on the Vernal team were Kurt Robb and Jeff Drollinger. Drollinger ripped out seven hits in three games. He pocketed six singles and one home run. Robb garnered five hits in three games. He belted the baseball for three doubles and two homers. Robb also was the winning pitcher in Vernal's 7 to 1 victory over Monroe in the first round of the tournament. Robb struck out 14 batters in the triumph over Monroe. A pitching machine has been used as the pitcher during regular season action in the Mustang League and some people figured the Vernal athletes would have problems hitting the baseball when they faced "live" pitching pit-ching in the Mustang District Tournament Tour-nament in Vernal last week. However, that wasn't the case as Vernal athletes hlistnrpd and battered the baseballs hurled by pitchers in the Mustang District Tournament. Vernal baseball teams exploded for 28 hits in the first round of action in the tournament. tour-nament. Vernal's B team connected for 13 hits in their first round game against Mapleton and Vernal's A team pounded the pitcher for 15 hits in a game against Springville. Vernal's B team pocketed 10 hits in a game against Springville and blistered the baseball for seven hits in a contest agaiast Vernal's A team. Vernal's A team nabbed eight hits in a game against Vernal's R team and had six hits in a game with Mapleton. Steve Hatch of Vernal's B team nablcd seven hits in the tournament. He had six singles and one double. Ron Nelson of Vernal's A team had six hits. He had five singles and one double. Vernal B team members, Brian Murray, Devon Peterson and Steve Bascom and Vernal A team member, Brian Oscarson, had five hits. Murray and Peterson slugged two doubles and three singles, and Bascom had one double and four singles. Oscarson pounded the baseball for five singles. So it apH'ars that the Vernal Mustang athletes didn't suffer from using the pitching machine and it might have helped them to become better hitters. The District Tournament also had a number of girls on various squads. Amy Wiscombe, Mapleton, had three singles in a Mustang League game against the Vernal B team, July 21. |
