Draft signups coming at steady pace Draft registration has been going smoothly at the Vernal Post Office, according to Postmaster- John E. Jones. Last week about 160 were registered, 51 signed up the first day, then it leveled off to about 25 a day, Jones stated. All males born in 1960 and 1961 are required to register for the draft in the new Selective Service System signup program mandated by President Carter and approved by Congress. The signup period is July 21 through August 2. Those born in 1960 were to sign up last week and those born in 1961 are to sign up this week. Jones stated that 40 men in the 1961 group signed up Monday. "Before the week is over we expect about 300 men to have registered through the Vernal post office," Jones stated. "It only takes about two to three minutes to fill out the form and sign it in the presence of a post office clerk," Jones explained. "We then send the form to the Salt Lake City post office for processing. Any of our clerks can give instructions on the draft registration." The registration is designed to improve im-prove the ability of the Selective Service Ser-vice to supplant the volunteer military force in a time of national emergency. |
