Wem! wd ft Ed S(S(3 D A fumble, a quarterback sack in the end zone, an interception and a penalty set up touchdowns and enabled the Lehi Pioneers to topple the Uintah Utes in Vernal, Friday, 23 to 0, in the season opener for the Vernal crew. The Uintah Utes won the coin toss and received the football in the first half. However, after three downs the Utes fumbled the ball and Lehi recovered on the Utes' 23 yard line. Lehi's Mike Bonds advanced the ball to the 12 yard line and Mark Jones darted to the two yard line. Jones, a quarterback who was converted to a running back this year, ripped up the middle through the Uintah defense for the first touchdown of the game at the 4 :05 mark. The extra point kick by Gordon Minen was good, which gave Lehi a 7-0 lead. Uintah's defense gained a number of sacks in the ball game. Lehi advanced to Uintah's 27 yard line early in the second se-cond quarter, but the Utes stopped the Pioneers dead in their tracks on a first down attempt. Uintah Utes sacked the Lehi quarterback, Wade Cardon, on a fourth down attempt at a first down and delivered a ten yard loss to the Pioneers in the second quarter. Late in the second quarter the ball was punted to Uintah and it darted between bet-ween two returners and stopped on the Uintah three yard line. Ralph Warby, Uintah's quarterback, was dropped by Jones for a safety at the 2:17 mark of the second quarter, which gave Lehi a 9 toO advantage. The ball was returned to Lehi on a free kick and a 30 yard bomb placed Lehi on Uintah's 15 yard line with 35 seconds left in the first half. The Pioneers advanced to the eight yard line on a running play and an offside penalty placed the ball on the four yard line. Bonds blasted up the middle for the second touchdown of the game with 30 seconds left. The kick by Minen was good. Uintah's Mark Robb gained a first down late in the first half, but the score at the end of the second quarter was Lehi, 16 and Uintah, 0. Uintah's best shot at a touchdown took place late in the third quarter and early in the frouth quarter. Lehi's quarterback, Cardon, was sacked and the ball popped loose. Brent Hales of Uintah recovered the ball on Lehi's 19 yard line late in the third quarter. The Utes advanced the ball to the 12 yard line, but Uintah was dropped for two losses and Jones intercepted a Warby War-by pass and advanced the ball to the Uintah 29-yard line. Bonds was stopped cold, two times by the Uintah Ute defense, but the third time he moved the ball to Uintah's 47 yard line. A running play placed Lehi on the 36 yard line, but an offside penalty moved Lehi to the 41 yard line. Lehi advanced the ball to the 30 yard line and an illegal use of hands penalty placed the Pioneers on the 15 yard line. Bonds moved the ball to the seven-yard line and Mark Griffin gained a first down on the three yard line Lehi advanced ad-vanced to the one-yard line, but a penalty penal-ty moved the Pioneers back to the six yard line. However, on the next play, Jones roared up the middle for the touchdown at the 1:20. mark of the fourth quarter. The extra point kick by Minen was good. Sophomore quarterback. Pal Jenkins was put in the game late in the fourth quarter and he fired a 40 yard bomb to Dave Emery, which placed Uintah on Lehi's 30 yard line. However, time ran out before the Utes could gain any points and the final score was: Lehi, 23 and Uintah, 0.
