According to school officials, voting for the bonds will not raise ones property taxes. The existing tax levy will be sufficient to pay off the bonds. The present trend indicates that interest rates are again increasing. The longer we wait, the higher the bond interest rates will go and the more inflation will increase the costs. So it is important that we act now. In Uintah County the homeowner only pays about one-fourth of property taxes collected by the county. Industry, businesses, mineral resources and utilities pay over three-fourths of our property taxes. But the homeowners have the majority of the voters. They can determine how these tax dollars will be spent. During the last few months industry and many major businesses have indicated in-dicated their willingness to invest huge sums in the future developments of the resources and businesses in our area. Oil companies have committed large sums to oil shale development. Large stores such as Smith's Food King, Safeway, City Market and McDonald's have either made plans or are considering con-sidering investing large sums of money for investments in our area. If these large corporations are willing to spend huge sums for the future development of our area, the registered voters need to show their support by investing in the future of our areas school facilities. Without adequate school facilities it is unlikely that we could accommodate the population growth expected in the future and also attract large businesses to locate here. Our elected school board members have carried the ball this far in presenting a school building program that is important to the future growth of public education in the area. They have also provided a way to finance this project without any direct cost to the individual taxpayer. Now it is our obligation to get out on election day and show "our support for increasing the capacity of our educational facilities by voting FOR the special bond proposition on Tuesday. |
