Show 0d and Scenic River proposal review period extended The National Park Service has ex-nded ex-nded for three weeks, until October 1, i?9, the public review period for a draft study proposing that a 91-mile segment of the Green River in Colorado and Utah and a 47-mile reach of the Yampa River in Colorado be added to the National Wild and Scenic River System. When first released for public review in July, the report' was to be available for a review period that would have ended on September 10. Regional Director Glen Bean said the sensitivity of the issue is such that the National Park Service and other participating agencies wish to assure adequate opportunity for public and official review and comment. The study report and draft environmental en-vironmental statement propose Wild and Scenic River status for the 91 miles of the Green River between Flaming Gorge Dam in Utah and the southern boundary of Dinosaur National Monument, and the 47 miles of the Yampa River between the eastern boundary of Dinosaur National Monument and the river's juncture with the Green. The study was a joint effort of the Service, the Colorado and Utah Departments of Natural Resources, the U.S. Forest Service, the Bureau of Land management, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Bureau of Mines and the Bureau of Reclamation. The study determined that the two rivers have outstanding scenic, recreation, geologic and fish and wildlife values deserving of preservation preser-vation for the future. |
