Show Devils Place Three, Holland Cops Gold Moab thinclads grabbed three places and junior Gregg Holland buried the field ih the half, mile run Saturday, as an unbelievable horde Of prepsters descended on the ' Salt Palace for the second high school indoor track meet in Utah history. Holland ran a startling 2:01.3 half mile for his gold medal and could have easily dipped under the two minute mark had he not so dominated dominat-ed his heat. He took the lead on the first lap of the board oval and steadily pulled ahead. ah-ead. Danny Robinson garnered a second place silver medal when he bounded to a 22 foot V2 inch long jump. The senior sen-ior athlete waited until his final jump for the mark which broke his own school record by 9'2 inches. Robinson also had a sixth place in the 440 yard dash in 53.7. The meet awarded six places with medals me-dals for the first three in each event. Holland's victory in the 880 yard run was a first for any athlete from a class B school. The Salt Palace meet does not have a classification division. Enrollment of the schools entered varied from the 2,757 of Skyline High to 221 for Beaver High School. In the meet held last year only a fraction of the Utah total of high schools entered boys. From that embryonic meet blossomed the largest meet Utah has seen. Fiv3 states, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, Mon-tana, Idaho and Colorado, were represented. ' Add to that, girl teams from Utah and Idaho. Each event had fifty or more entered with the 60 yard dash the biggest with 70 entries. The mark achieved reflected re-flected the additional entrants. en-trants. Three boys broke the record for the 300 yard dash. In the long jump, three boys went over 22 feet and 210" was only good for sixth. The high jump went to 6'5", whereas where-as last year a 5'7" jump was good for fourth. That's the way it went. Coach Del Ford, still savoring sav-oring the victory of his mile relay team in the WAC finals fin-als special event, was quite pleased with the nine boys from Moab after the meet. Highlights included a 34.4 second sec-ond mark for Steve Stout in the 300 yard dash where 33.7 placed. He won his heat. Von Isaman high jumped 5'11" for a fine mark early in this season. Ryan Modesto ran a 4:49.0 mile for fourth in his heat and led for most of the way. Craig Gerber . was a tough second in his beat of the 440 yard dash and his time of 55.4 equalled his best of last year. Kurt Blust ran a 2:14 for the 880 placing him well up in his heat. Lenny Walterschied and Jerry Cowan Cow-an also placed well in their heats. |
