When I was still a resident of Indiana, I eagerly anticipated the weekly arrival arriv-al on a Monday morning, of ' the Times Independent. Now that I am a full-fledged Mo-abite, Mo-abite, my enthusiasm is just as great. It is a tremendous little paper. My second purpose for writing writ-ing is in support of local merchants mer-chants who are often gunned down by certain people for charging high prices. Vfa were beginning to feel that perhaps certain products, especially es-pecially in the food line, were a little on the high side. However How-ever on a trip to California in November, we made some comparisons and found that Moab really wasn't too fat-out fat-out of line on basic foods. Another trip back to Indiana further substantiated our thinking. Moab meat prices are about the same as either area mentioned men-tioned above. Strangely, California Cal-ifornia produce prices were higher. The same situation exists in Indiana. Dairy prices are higher in Moab and that is understandable due to shipping rates: Calif, has no sales tax on edibles, so this puts Moab 5 percent higher. Indiana has 2 percent sales tax on food. But and this is where I found a tremendous difference when a Moab merchant has a sale on food items, it is usually a real bargain and in something that you can use everyday. Indiana has its weekly "sale" but seldom an item that you would need very often. A classic comparison is Moab's recent "Tomato War". When the consumer can buy a lb. of tomatoes in mid February for 18 cents that's a bargin. I'll almost wager that 'the-merchant 'the-merchant was losing a dime a pound for this "leader". Too often people get the idea that the 18 cents is the normal price. Gasoline prices is another interesting item to discuss. Current cut-rate gasoline in Moab is about 35 cents. You can travel cross country and find it ranging from 25 to 37 In Indi&Tiapolis in January it was 34.9 (cut-rate) and that is within a 14 minute drive from the refinery! So since there is no gas war on in Moab Mo-ab currently, you are buying ' your fuel at the correct price. Doctor bills, prescription prices, taxes, and labor is cheaper in Moab, so summing it all up I feel I can live mora cheaply here than the midwest mid-west or West Coast. I've tried it - I like it! Thirdly why don't they have a house or lot numbering number-ing system south on 163? The the roads been in over 15. years. When people come for a visti, what address do we give? VIVIA LA MOAB Fred Radcliff. ; - Dear Sam: About four weeks ago the LDS Church decided to remove re-move the trees on the west side of my home which were on the proDP'-tv line. These trees were used in part to support the fence which runs along the property proper-ty and extended several hundred hun-dred feet to the north behind the homes on Park Road. The morning this work was started I was assured that a fence would be reinstalled equal to the old fence, which at least would keep the stray animals out of my back yard. . I offered to pay half the cost of a chain link fence if they would put it up but as the situation now stands I'm supposed to pay for all the costs. Along with this problem, we have the street and my lawn flooded every summer either by the irrigation ditch or the street being dammed preventing the water to drain off. My neighbor, who is faced with the same problem, approached ap-proached the City Council, but they offered no help. I'm unhappy, Cliff Sackerson |
