Show Chess Tourney Gets Underway This Week The recently formed Moab Chess Club started its first chess tournament this week with a surprising 20 participants, partici-pants, including one woman player, Mrs. Terby Barnes. In comparison, a current Salt Lake City contest has only 50 entrants. The Moab tournament tourna-ment will continue for ten weeks, ending April 25th. Elected as judges for tlm Moab tourney are Terby Barnes, Bar-nes, Tom Ossana and Art Swanson. The judges will oversee ov-ersee scoring, settle any disputes, dis-putes, allow necessary variances vari-ances from the rule that all games must be played during regular chess club meetings, total final scores, and present pre-sent the awards to the top three players at the end of the contest. First prize is a handsome trophy, a gold chess piece standing on a hardwood base. Second and third , prizes are books on chess. The rules governing the Moab Chess Club tournament have been kept relatively, simple, permitting informal play and allowing players to schedule their own games, yet with provisions for equalizing equal-izing scores , should . some players not complete all their games by the end of the tour- nament. There may be a follow-up to. the contest, now underway. Tentative teelers .. have been received from ' Cedar City cheSs enthusiasts who hope to challenge the Moab winners to a championship match. |
