Show There's nothing very special spec-ial about a 74th birthday, except ex-cept perhaps that it is the one just before the 75th which usually gets quite a bit of fanfare. The event will be, however, quietly observed early in March by the Moab Woman's Literary Club an organiza-. organiza-. tion which has the longest record of service to the community com-munity among all its civic clubs. And although appearances have changed, the enthusiasm of members and their ambitions ambi-tions for the community continue con-tinue much as when the club was brand new. Around the turn of the century, cen-tury, members petitioned the Town Board to do something about the hard-drinking, hard-riding hard-riding cowboys who were shooting up the downtown area on weekend afternoons. A clamp-down was needed., they said, to make the com- munity a better place to live and raise a family. This week, concerned members mem-bers met with the Grand County Commission to urge that board to place the question ques-tion of whether or not to have a nursing home on the ballot for the voters to decide, de-cide, since it is obvious the Commission doesn't want to make that decision all by itself. More power to you, ladies. May your next 74 years be as worthwhile for the community com-munity as the first 74 have been. -SJT- Sincere best wishes in his new position go to Bill Bes-singer, Bes-singer, former general manager man-ager of potash operations for Texas Gulf Sulphur Co., who last week announced that he had been named president of Boone County Coal Corp., near Madison, West Virginia. The job of continually cut- ting costs, reducing employment employ-ment and changing processes at the Cane Creek operation near Moab over the years in an attempt to make that operation op-eration viable and competitive, competi-tive, could not have been very pleasant, although it must have been challenging. His efforts at Cane Creek, however, are responsible to a great degree for the early successes - being indicated by the new solar evaporation process. To Bill, Mary and their son, Stephen, go our best wishes in their new home and in the new job. -SJT-Having recovered miraculously miracu-lously from the after-shock of his Jan. 1 water bill letter, Mayor Winford Bunce this week undertook the thankless job of membership chairman for the Chamber of Commerce. Com-merce. Don't write 'em a letter. Mayor. Go see them personally personal-ly about that membership. |
