Show Police Chief Urges Riders To be Wary of Traffic Concern was expressed by Moato City Police Chief, Mel Dal'tom early Wednesday, aboult! smal, but aonoyingi problems which 'are becoming becom-ing progressively worse around ar-ound the Moab area. Horseback riding is preve-lent preve-lent in the su'irimertime, and is a popular pastime with Moab youths who are out of school for the summer. It should be understood, however, Itlha't horses are not to be ridden on the sidewalks side-walks in downtown Moab, and that when the horses are on the streets or the major highway runnlinig through the icity, they are considered consider-ed as a vehicle and must adhere ad-here ito all (traffic rules. Another concern to owners own-ers of large parking areas, such as the supermarkets and drug stores, is the litter which is constanilly scattered scatter-ed and left for their personnel person-nel to clean up. The chief reminded area residents that these parking lots, are private pri-vate propenty and can be closed, especially after shopping shop-ping hours, to the public. Complaints have been frequent this past week about cars blocking the driveways across from the Moab -rec-reatiion ball field during the evening ball games. Vehicles Vehic-les are to park in areas which do not block private, (residents from access : to their own property. Four automobile accidents were investigated by members mem-bers of the Police Department Depart-ment this past week, the first occurring on private property m June 24, in the U. S. Posit Office parking lot. Emil W. Penichter of Scotia, New York, driving a 1970 Ford, backed into a 1968 Chevrolet driven by Chaumcie Taylor of Moab. About $59 damage was done to the Penichter vehicle and $100 (to the Tayor automobile. automo-bile. No citations were issued. is-sued. On Thursday, June 25, Harvey E. Morley, driving a 1965 Chevrolet, ran into Leonard Harmison in a 1959 Ford pickup in an accident ac-cident on South Main. The Morley vehicle sustained $259 damage and the Harmison Harm-ison $100 damage. Mr. Morley Mor-ley was cited for improper lookout, causing an accident. acci-dent. The third mishap, occurring occur-ring on Friday, June 26, involved in-volved a 1966 Plymouth driven dri-ven by John W. Denton, which ran broadside into a 1969 Ford driven toy Han-nab Han-nab Pittmann. The accident occurred on 'the 1st North and Main Stretet intersection. Mrs. Pittman was taken to the Allen Memorial Hospital and treated for 'bruises.. Approximately Approxi-mately $890 damage was recorded re-corded to her vehicle, while $590 was done to the Denton automobile. Saturday, June 27, a 1969 Ford belonging to Allen Wayne Kernrv backed into a 1969 Ford belcngmg to Dick Moore wh'le it was parked in the parking lot of a local restaurant. No citations were issued as the accident occurred on private property. proper-ty. $50 damage was sustained by the Kemry vehicle and $230 by the Moore car. Other police activity investigated inves-tigated this week included the theft of two wtalkie talkies valued at $130 which were stolen from Hub NewelFs office of-fice after a back window was broken to gain entry into the building. The theft is still under un-der investigation. Another window broken on a local establishment occurred occur-red at the Moab Lumber Company on June 27. No evidence of theft was found, however. The matter is still under investigation. |
