Show Dear Sam: It is disturbing to see the Utah Agencies and some local lo-cal voices urging a short term ''solution" to our air transportation problems, especially es-pecially when this "solution" will aggravate the situation over the future years. The root of the problems that we face along With many ether small communities is found in the almost complete lack of information about cur air travel system by the traveling public. Unfortunately, Unfor-tunately, this also includes many cf the influential voices voic-es in the country. One cf the basic factors involved is that the airlines hav been "bailed out" over-the over-the years by subsidies whenever when-ever they got in- over their heads trying to keep up with the latest equipment whet'hev or not it fitted the type of flying they needed to do. It doesn't make sense to fly Convair 580's, or 727's either, into a town the size of Moab. If this were the only way (to provide safe transportation it -would be necessary, but it just isn't so. There are aircraft on the market at the present time designed specifically for this type of service. These are all weather planes with a passenger pas-senger capacity adequate for a shcrt haul service, and abUe to do it at a profit at a small load factor. iWhen properly flown these are just as safe as any planes flown anywhere and the crews are available. All the major airlines, with few exceptions are in trouble, due to getting in too deep with equipment and duplicated dupli-cated schedules and they have laid off dozens of the finest pilots available anywhere. any-where. A sensible system would use these men and these planes and make money mon-ey while providing better service than we've ever known. All this can and should be done without you and I -picking up the tab for the difference between ticket price and actual cost as is done now. .It's a sad commentary that one can take a 150 mph .airplane from Moab and heat, often by hours, a;ir-line a;ir-line time to almost a ny-where ny-where west of the Mississippi. Mississip-pi. Let's cut the artificially lew ai,r fares loose and let each of us pay a legitimate fare when w travel. Let's for-iget for-iget subsidies and get on with the job cf providing, good safe, practical air i'ransportation. If we keep on propping up the present mess it will eventually collapse col-lapse and we'll be in a worse mess than we are new. Sincerely, Dail W. Ma gee Citizens: The report, last week, of .the disagreement over a release re-lease of a prisoner (toy court order) was .not complete. This order besides releasing (the prisoner Monday thru (Friday, also released him Sunday until 4:30 p.m., to ispend time with his family. ITihfts order said nothing about being released to wcrk nor any of the other stipulations which were mentioned me-ntioned -after people began looking into this and asking questions Supposedly the prisoner is to have supervision super-vision during his release (hours-. Monday thru Friday and supposedly he is to be working the full time that he as out -of jail, does this imean a nice outing like a long restful car ride on Flri-d'ay? Flri-d'ay? Is (that working in the hot sun? Now, what about Sunday? It appears the only day (the prisoner i9 to toe in jatt is Saturday, wh'iiah is visitors day. After all, someone some-one should be there when visitors call. Looking into some of the Ifacts you will find that this was a 2nd drug charge for this person and that this ' i2nd charge was for selling .which was reduced to . possession pos-session toy the County Attorney, At-torney, Why? Why did the Judge sentence this person iat all 'if ha didn't injtend for the sentence to be served? -The Sheriff objected to the release of this prisoner for several very good reasons; then why djid Ithe Judge release re-lease him 'and why to the pity Police? .Why is it al-Imost al-Imost impossible for some lofreers to get the needed papers from Uhe County Attorneys At-torneys Office in order to make a search or an arrest? IThese and many more questions ques-tions need an honest to goodness moral and intelligent intelli-gent answer land not a full law course which begins and ends wTih, 'according to Section Sec-tion XYZ "The rights of the Prisoner are ". I do -not dingle out the above case 'as being special but only because be-cause it is the most recent case and an example of the permissiive attitude relating fto -the drug problem. It seeims it would be much 'simpler to give each prisoner prison-er .a key so they could come .and go as Ithey wished and save the Sheriff (the bother !0f Oiaving to (let them in- and out . as the Judge sees fit. I icerifcanly agree with the Sheriff that the Jail should not be used as a recreation--area. I 'think it is high ttme that a prisoner be just ithat-A ithat-A . Prisoner- and that they should ' serve their time in Jail and not in- the hospital, at home, out riding in a car or at any other location. Another important -thing f hat should concern! everyone every-one was the uproar 'that was created All because some very capable, intelligent and meeting ito see what could be interested citizens had a done about the ever growing grow-ing dangerous drug situation iwe have here. This meeting (was held in theCourlhouse and (the door was wide open. It seems, however, that there were some who felt thfay should have received an engraved- invitation and screamed like a mashed cat for this oversight. Since when did it become necessary neces-sary tt0 be hand picked and spoon fed or appointed by someone to act as an inter-estd inter-estd and concerned- citizen? citi-zen? If asking a few questions ques-tions caused such an uproar then it is time -for deep concern, and time that everyone ev-eryone become Self-Appoint-ed to work for freeing our town of drug users, sellers, pushers and etc., and let it be known, beyond a reasonable reason-able doubt that we want punishment for these offenses offen-ses and rthat we want it enforced. en-forced. A town is only as decent de-cent as the people want it to be, and if you are not proud of our town being 1st .in Per Oap-'lta Drug Users then it is time for you to speak up.
