Show Big Visitor Increase Noted in Local Parks Significant increases of visiters to the National Parks and Monuments in the area were evident during the month of June, with the exception ex-ception of the Island In The Sky section in Canyonlands National Park. The largest increase was shown in the Needles Section of the Park, with 3,0C2 visitors, visi-tors, a 73 per cent increass over figures of 1,727 recorded ,in June one year ago. This' section of Canyonlands National Na-tional Park also showed a 71 per cent increase in visitors for 1970, as compared with the same time period in 1969. A spokesman for the park indicated in-dicated that significant road improvements in the area were basically responsible for the increase. The main highway into the area is now completely paved into the Squaw Flat Campground and enables travelers with all types of vehicles to enjoy the scenic drive. Arches National Monument also showed a significant increase in-crease over June 1969, by recording re-cording over 3,000 more visi- tors in the area this ' past month. An increase of 10 per cent, both for the month and for ithe year, indicates a total of 79,038 persons who Visited the area this year. The year's total, however, is 7 per cent lower than figures recorded in 1969. The only Significant decrease de-crease in visitations was recorded re-corded in the Island In The Sky, where only 3,708 persons per-sons visited in June, as compared com-pared to 5,102 in June, 1969. Only 7,667 persons have registered reg-istered in 1970, which is a decrease of almost 1,000 people. Again, the roads into the area could have had an effect on the figures, the spokesman indicated, as the road is paved only as far as the Dead Horse Point turnoff. |
