Show SO OHS TIMES . fl 11 "V By Ernie Milner fcj . . . --..-............'.".".,I High school sports provide an opportunity ior all persons living in the local areas to second guess the coaches. That even happens at the college level and of i in i . - J ' i course, the professional level. During tne past weekend, the Moab Red Devils played one - of the hardest hitting football games in recent rec-ent years and did a lot of the hitting themselves. them-selves. They came out of the game unscathed, and yet wiser for the chance to play a team of the calibre of the Kirtland, New Mexico Broncos. Opinions by some fans differed and many other persons have not yet had the opportunity to voice their thoughts. Some believed be-lieved that talcing a chance of risking injury to the star players play-ers of the Devil team was too great. Others thought that playing the game in the type of weather and field conditions was not safe and would not prove beneficial to anyone. Some even thought that the game should be cancelled, while others felt that the game would yield marked experience for the team. One of the facts remains. Should the Devil coaches have cancelled the game, removing the risk of injury, or should they have played as scheduled? Most of the fans felt that to back out of the game would be to admit that a loss was inevitable. Even though the Devils did lose the game, you couldn't replace that actual experience of combat on the field with that of a practice. The chances of the Devils going to northern Utah for championship competition and playing in the rain or snow are increasing daily. Having played on a field of this type can only have taught the athletes how to handle themselves and how to pace themselves. They say experience is the best teacher. ..let's hope so. Local deer hunters went high and low over the past weekend week-end trying to locate their buckskin. Few came home Saturday everting with We trophy, but 'Sunday seemed to be better." Local areas were covered with muddy roads as predicted, and four-wheel drive vehicles were the order of the day. Those who could get into favorite areas found that the lack of pressure from other hunters didn't move the deer around ar-ound as well as normal hunting years. Some areas were completely com-pletely inaccessible, except to those with horses. Hunters in the high country had chances to get record bucks but some of the lower areas yielded fine animals. The desert hunting was slow and few animals were taken, compared to normal years where the water has been available . during the entire year. Wet and cold, weather has not arrived, soon enough and the deer are still on' the high mountain areas and not pushed into winter grazing ranges. With the weather clearing toward the end of the week, the next few days may prove to be the best of the hunt. |
