Show Dear Sam: Like probably 99 of the listeners of radio, I was thoroughly disgusted upon hearing the report from David Mays of the recent vandalism of the "All American Man" pictograph in Salt Creek. My disgust is pointed to the individual indi-vidual responsible for such an act. I'm in support of Mr. Mays decision to close off a portion of Horseshoe Canyon to vehicular traffic in an effort to thwart further similar simi-lar acts of desecration to these ancient arts. I can, in no way, understand what kind or type of clod would resort to this sort of thing, but I'm afraid that most of our antiquities an-tiquities are destined to be molested in the future by these thoughtless individuals. However, I came upon a recent similar incident, only this time committed by some governmental agency. I was hiking through the cedars on a mesa to the west of Bland-ing. Bland-ing. Upon reaching the edge, I looked back beneath the ledge and noticed a series of well preserved Cliff dwellings. dwel-lings. After 30 minutes of climbing, sliding, and crawling, crawl-ing, I reached my new find. The condition of the ruin, indicated few people had been here, but the real shocker was this: On the sandstone rock, directly above one of the ruins was this series of numbers "42 S a 1722-4". 1722-4". These letters were placed here with a bright yellow paint and I can see no purpose for a vandal going to this effort to just inscribe numbers and letters, so we must blame some other source. In all fairness to BLM or whoever, it is quite possible these were painted on years ago before be-fore the age of ecology. Summing it up, I'm in complete com-plete agreement with the Park; that is, limit the roads and don't, indicate or point out all ruins and artifacts. Sincerely, Fred Radcliff Editor Times Independent:' Please allow me to set the record straight with reference refe-rence to the Thompson news column in the Times Independent Inde-pendent on 10-18-72 by reporter re-porter Virginia Gruver concerning con-cerning the annexation of certain cer-tain property owned by Lester Les-ter Rogers into the Thompson Thomp-son Water Improvement Dis- rict by tne Grand County 3oard of County Commissioners Commis-sioners on 10-16-72 in their regularly scheduled meeting on that date. The facts are as follows: The basic conflict was not whether the people of the District have water to drink but whether my potential business property at the proposed pro-posed 1-70 interchange would be added to the District., My revised petition assures adequate ade-quate water pressure to the original district before any water would flow to my newly annexed land. The two major industries in the District, The Rio Grande Railroad and Kenne-cott Kenne-cott Copper Corp. did not object to my revised petition. The correct statistics of the Water District Board and the 'for' and 'against' petitions peti-tions are as follows: Total registered voters; for 21 (not "only 10" as the reported statedl. aeainst 15. Total re gistered voters ownhig r-ea) property; for 14, against 10. Total real property owners but not registered voters; for 13, against 3. Total registered regi-stered voters but not real property owners; for 7, against 3. Total all voters andor real property owners; for 34, against 18. In addition, the smallesl real property owner, with one town lot and the largest one, with over 700 acres in th District, were both for annexation. It is regretable that the reporter's personal bias and reliance on faulty information resulted in unfair and inaccurate inaccu-rate reporting of the facts. However, even playing by her rules, 21 voters were for annexation and only 15 against. In conclusion: I bear annexation annex-ation opponents no ill will. It is possible that they were deliberately misadvised to delay the decision and to keep me busy fighting as long as possible for annexation, so that I would not have as much time to campaign for the State Senate against Mr. Omar. B. Bunnell whose attorney brother is a close associate of the attorney who advised my annexation opponents. oppo-nents. Thank you, Les Rogers |
