Show Pigeon Catch Conducted Near Monticello Rocket nets were used in the first successful band-tailed band-tailed pigeon banding operation oper-ation in Monticello conducted conduct-ed by the Division of Fish and Game after banding efforts ef-forts using bait traps and mist nets were unsuccessful. Rodney John, Game Biol-' ogist, and Cecil Jones, Con-' servation Officer, set up a rocket net in an area where '"early 500 band-tailed pigeons pig-eons were coming in for grains. Nearly 250 birds were trapped trap-ped and banded. Any information infor-mation received from the banding project will aid in determining more exactly the migration patterns of the pigeons in southeastern Utah. Band-tailed pigeons are nesting in this area. A number num-ber of this year's young birds were trapped along with adult birds. These birds lay only one egg and nest only once each year. There is no band-tailed pigeon hunting in Utah although al-though some other western states have hunting seasons. Wintering areas for birds in Utah during the summer is probably Arizona, New Mexico and Mexico. Band - tailed pigeons are a dark-meated bird and are considered sporting birds to hunt. |
