Show jj Green River A Letter from Pearl, lona and Barbara... Melon Day was rather a quiet celebration this year, with the Motocross being the most exciting event. The Parade turned out four winners, American Ameri-can Legion Auxiliary first place, ESA 2nd, and Ray's Tavern 3rd. A special spe-cial prize went to Woman's Wom-an's Club for their Horn of Plenty presentation. In the children's section, sec-tion, Bonnie Baxter took 1st with Helen Milton and her "Safety First" group taking 2nd. This was a fine presentation of the crossing guard program, and drew attention of the community and visitors to the highway crossing problem now that school has started again. The horseback section brought a first prize for Laura and Claudia Acer-son, Acer-son, and a 2nd to Kresha while touring this area of Utah. The Russell's were residents here 8 years ago and resided in the Ekker trailer rental while he was with the Pershing Missile Firings from Gilson Buttes. Kerry Bruce Ekker and Kevin Hatch were uninjured unin-jured in a truck accident Saturday evening on the Blue Dugway when the driver went to sleep and the truck left the highway. high-way. The front end of the pickup was damaged extensively ex-tensively in the accident. Mrs. Loretta Campbell is in Salt Lake visiting her mother and awaiting the arrival of their fifth child. Mr. Campbell is in maintenance at the FAA airport here. Mrs. Connie Palmer and new son, William Concer, were honored at a baby shower Friday at the Charlene Shirley home with Mrs. Jan Hunt and Mrs. Shirley Wilcox as hostesses. Michelle Wilcox, eight year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Wilcox was honored on her birthday birth-day Sept. 9th with a party at her home. A dozen guests were present and enjoyed games and refreshments. re-freshments. Mrs. Marjorie Chaney returned home this week from Missoula, Montana where she's been visiting her daughter and four granddaughters. Lois is a teacher in that area of ' retarded children. Mrs. Rae Lene F.kker and sons joined husband, Dean, at Fairview, Utah this past week where he's . working on road construction con-struction for Strong Construction Con-struction Co. doing work in the San Pete County area. Mrs. Etta F.kker enjoyed en-joyed a visit this past week with her son and family from Payson. It was reported that the Fist and Wildlife Officers Of-ficers apprehended a group from Farmington, New Mexico area in Tracy Tra-cy te Canyon in possession pos-session of twodeer killed out of season. They had boated up Lake Powell and had the deer in their possession when apprehended. Dunham. The Green River High School band marched and played, and they have never looked better. Mr. Evans has a large group this year, and they are shaping up in fine fashion. Bonine's Bar B stables furnished most of the horses, and also had a surrey with the fringe on top in the parade, but did not compete for a prize. Color guard came from the Missile Base and were from the 3rd Battalion, Bat-talion, 9th Field Artillery. Artil-lery. Helicopters of the Pershing missile firing group performed a flyover fly-over which was much enjoyed en-joyed by the spectators. , Fire Chief Clark Riches Ri-ches reports that the dance was a huge success. suc-cess. "The Fugitives" from Price furnished the music, and did a fine job. The crowd was the biggest that Melon Day has ever drawn, and the firemen are well pleased with the boost to their budget. Members of the Jeep Posse in Green River sponsored a Motocross on Sunday afternoon. Jeep Posse Secretary Dale Johnson reported the weather was fine, not too hot, and there was a good crowd. The Posse concession was a real success. Junior Girl Scouts. . . Green River Junior Girl Scouts enjoyed "Outdoor Skill Day" on Saturday. At a meeting at Green River State Park they practiced fire build-' ing and cooked delicious dutch oven foods. After lunch they enjoyed a nature na-ture hike and gathered for new songs and games taught by Utah Girl Scout Council's Field Advisor, Mrs. Jan Oliveto. Mrs. Wendell Weber, Mrs. Ted Ekker, Mrs. Eugene .Lasson supervised super-vised the swimming activity ac-tivity to top off the fun-filled fun-filled day. Expenses for the affair came from Girl Scout cookie profits. New leaders are Mrs. Verna Watterson, Brownie Brow-nie Scout 2nd graders, with meetings at - her home each Monday from 3:30-4:45. Mrs. Roy May will lead the Brownie Scout 3rd graders, and they will meet at the School Cafeteria on Mondays, Mon-days, 3:45-5:00. Mrs. Bud Richardson will supervise su-pervise the Junior Scouts, the 4-5-6 graders, grad-ers, and they will meet at the school Cafeteria on Mondays 3:45-5:00, starting September 17. Denverites Visit. . . Mr. and Mrs. Stan Loh-man Loh-man spent a short time at the Pearl Baker home on Friday. She and Stan were "phone-pals" from calls made from Denver on historical matters of the area. Stan is working on a geological paper for Canyonlands, after just having finished one of the Arches. He and Mrs. Lohman are adding to their photos of the Arches, Arch-es, and finding hiking a bit difficult for city folk. Not so Chuck, the dog, he is having a ball. Folsoms Entertain. . . The John Folsom family fami-ly has had a number of visitors this week. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Nielson from Mancos and Mr. and Mrs. Freestone from Junction, Utah were in early this week. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Swasey and Kim and Kitten drove down from Vernal. Mr. and Mrs. Don Brinkerhoff, Bess' nephew, from Beaver Bea-ver called in and Mr. and Mrs. Norm Labonta (Peggy Sothers) from Denver dropped over for a visit when they brought their son to Mesa College. The Monticcllo Bucka-roos Bucka-roos stopped two first half drives and capitalized capital-ized on Green River er-ros er-ros to notch a 26-0 victory vic-tory over the visiting Pirates. 3 Green River All-State candidate, Jeff Accrson. and Tailback. Phil Slub-blefield Slub-blefield moved the ball at will only to be stopped on the Monticcllo 4-yard line in the first quarter. Green River put together to-gether another drive in the second quarter only to give up the ball on the Monticcllo 18 yard line. Hard running Richard Hedshaw scored at 5:25 in the second quarter after a fumble recovery. In less than two minutes Monticcllo scored again on a 45 yard punt return when the Pirates had only ten men on the field to cover a punt. It was a tough loss for Pirate Coach Art Hughes. He had his team up for the game who dominated the game until the scores came late in the second quarter. A good team will capitalize on opponents mistakes and Monticcllo never lost its poise.
