Show Flights Delayed Again As Crevs Work On Runway Problem After only one flight last Saturday by Frontier Fron-tier Airlines into Can-yonlands Can-yonlands Field, that company com-pany curtailed service to this area again. Last Saturday's Sat-urday's flight was the first into the field in over a year. Reason for the curtailment curtail-ment of service, according accord-ing to Frontier station manager Ron Corneli-son Corneli-son is thr f r'tc' remaining on tlie runway following resurfacing as part of a general reconstruction recon-struction project done by Schocker Construction. Because of the difficulties, difficul-ties, the Grand County Commission acted this week to refuse payment to the Company until such time as the runway is put into acceptable condition. Mr. Cornelison stated that when Frontier's flight came in Saturday, the rocks on the runway were loose enough that they began hitting the body of the aircraft as well as the flaps. This, he said, could be dangerous. danger-ous. The primary problem, prob-lem, however, could occur oc-cur he said, if these rocks which are being blown in-to in-to the air are pulled into the engine of the craft. If this were to happen, it could cause the loss of the engine, he stated. For this reason, safety of the passengers, service ser-vice was stopped. According to Mr. Cornelison, Cor-nelison, officials of the Federal Aviation Administration Admin-istration were at the field on Tuesday and inspected the runway. Earlier in the week, m.ich of the loose gravel h i been swept from the surface, however, how-ever, the FAA stated that the construction firm would be required to use a heavy roller on the runway for a period of four days before it would be acceptable to them. The FAA also indicated that they planned to make some tests of the oil used in laying the surface because be-cause it was not acting as it should. In light of the work done by the contractor during this week, Frontier Fron-tier has tentatively scheduled sche-duled flight service to resume re-sume this Saturday. Reconstruction work on the runway was sheduled last year after Frontier halted service to the field because of thebumpiness of the surface. Mr. Cornelison Cor-nelison said that those undulations appear to have been cured and the surface is smooth at this time. The loose gravel remains the only problem, prob-lem, he concluded. |
