Show Bluff Residents Planning Modern Sevaae System By AJvin Reiner A town meeting to decide where to locate the proposed sewage system for the San Juan County town of Bluff, was held on Tuesday, November Novem-ber 9th. About forty concerned concern-ed citizens attended the gathering which also considered consider-ed the type of system to be installed. Mr. Rodney Preator, of the engineering firm of Morrison, Maierle and Preator of Salt Lake City opened with remarks concerning the possibility of the Federal Government financing fi-nancing the project. He estimated that the Environmental Environ-mental Protection Agency would pay 75 of the treatment costs. Jim Taleb-Reza, the engineer engi-neer who was responsible for most of the field work, explained the problems inherent inher-ent in finding a suitable location. One of the considerations considera-tions was the E.P.A. requirement require-ment that the so-called 100 year storm could not affect the system. Three sites were investigated, two of which are presently managed by the B.L.M. and the other belong ing to Gene Foushee of Bluff. ; The latter was recommended by the engineers and seconded by the citizens as it was by far the cheapest and would not be tied up in the courts for two m years as the BLM lands would. The following types of systems were also discussed: 1. A physical and chemical system in which the water would be treated before being released. 2. A lagoon or effluent stabilization pond which would consist of three cells. The water would then be allowed to drain into a leach field. 3. A retention system in which the water would be allowed to evaporate. 4. Land application which would be similar to proposal no. 2 except the water would be used for irrigation purposes. pur-poses. This method was discounted when it was shown there would only be enough water to irrigate two acres. System number two was the one the engineers proposed as it is the cheapest to build and easiest to maintain. The citizens and Board of Trustees went along with their proposal. propos-al. If the grants are approved, work will begin immediately thereafter and sewers will be ready to be connected by the end of the summer of 1977. |
