Show Slick Rock Project Winds to Finish I "We got more mileage out of their money than they anticipated," commented City Councilman Harold Jacobs l Wednesday, referring to the Slick Rock Project. With all of the originally planned work completed, there is still a little money left, and this will be used for check dams in Stewart Canyon, behind the Husky Station, a long-time problem flood area. The work will be contingent upon approval of a time extension for completion of the work, however. The Slick Rock project, originally funded with $225,000 from the Four Corners Corn-ers Regional Commission, has been going on 14 months and during that time has utilized 121 employees and 2 horses. In Bliss Canyon 70 check dams were constructed, and in Stewart Canyon 13 were constructed in conformance with the original grant plan. The most imposing structure struc-ture completed in the project is the earthen dam located behind Essie White's resident on East Center Street. If constructed by a private contractor, the dam would probably have cost some $150,000, it has been estimated. estimat-ed. For the pipe, steel, wire and ' culvert in the dam, between i $15,000 and $17,000 of the J original grant was used. The rest was in-kind labor and equipment from Moab City and Grand County which represented no out-of-pocket expenditures except gas and salaries of regular employees. Councilman Jacobs gives major credit for the structure to County Supervisor Valjean Westwood and the county crews for their part in the project. Since 10 per cent of most federal grants is withheld pending completions of work, Moab City has furnished this amount to do the extra work in Stewart Canyon, for which they will be reimbursed shortly after the "bonus" dams are finished. |
