Show Grand District Teachers Awarded Teacher Leadership Honors I Teachers from the Grand County School District Dis-trict were honored recently re-cently in the teacher leadership program designed de-signed to provide career advancement opportunities opportunit-ies for outstanding teacher tea-cher leaders. The program pro-gram is sponsored annually an-nually by the State of Utah. The central purpose of this program is to give salary recognition above and beyond the regularly regular-ly adopted salarie schedule sche-dule for outstanding performance per-formance in the field of educational administration administra-tion or supervision. The benefit to the district dis-trict as a whole will be curriculum development, improvement and innovation, innova-tion, greater individual. -ation of instruction, improved im-proved quality of teaching, teach-ing, and improved student attitude. The teachers were selected by a committee com-mittee composed of teachers, administrators, administra-tors, and School Board members. Ted Tibbetts Chosen in the program was Southeast Elementary Elemen-tary teacher Ted Tibbets who proposeda program of career education for elementary school. This program is designed to make both teachers and students more aware of career oportunities. Dotty Swasey Dotty Swasey, Junior High art teacher, was given gi-ven the award for her proposal in the field of career education in Art. For her students, Mrs. Swasey has prepared a lesson which includes selling articles made in class. To start the program, pro-gram, the students will participate in the Autumn Festival at the park this weekend. They are going to setup their own booths, and sell their work. After Af-ter the art sale, they have plans to set up a business bus-iness downtown. Mrs. Swasey stated that this experience will give the students a better understanding under-standing of how to set up a business downtown. Deanna Olearain Another winner in the program was Deanna Olearain Ol-earain whose proposal was for career awareness aware-ness in the elementary school. Mrs. Olearain teaches at Helen M. Knight school. Her project pro-ject objectives include; (a) to provide the students with opportunities to develop de-velop a self-awareness; (b) to provide the student stud-ent with opportunities to develop a respect. for the dignity of work; (c) to improve the student's ability ab-ility to set realistic goals for his future; (d) to provide pro-vide a two-way relationship relation-ship between the classroom class-room and the community. There will be field trips to places of business, resource visitors to the classroom, and role-playing. role-playing. Helen Madsen Helen Madsen, from Southeast Elementary, was selected for a curriculum cur-riculum change in the Sixth Grade Social Studies program. This program will be designed to make the learning experience ex-perience more enjoyable, because it is geared to the student's own enjoyment. This program will motivate mo-tivate children who have been previously "turned off in Social Studies. Ron Olson Ron Olson's proposal was pased on providing a detailed administration plan and science curriculum curri-culum for the summer school program. His proposed pro-posed program will (1) provide a basis for a permanent per-manent outdoor education program in the Grand County Schools, (2) provide pro-vide a foundation that any teacher could build and improve on, and (3) provide pro-vide an opportunity in the summer school program, and (4) provide an individualized in-dividualized science curriculum cur-riculum for both junior and senior high students. James Walker James Walker, who is directing efforts at the Moab Area Vocational Center, also made a proposal pro-posal concerned with the summer school program. This proposal was to write units of individualized individua-lized social studies and math. There has been no detailed written curriculum curricu-lum guide for the summer school program. He proposes pro-poses to write a program with a variety of individualized indi-vidualized projects with varying difficulty with the possibility of an in depth study in math and social studies. Bill Bacon Bill Bacon from the Junior High School was awarded for his proposal for working with the needs of individual student. stud-ent. Some of these needs are self-esteem, security, secur-ity, compassion, and successful suc-cessful learning experiences. exper-iences. He will work with these students individually indivi-dually and in the classroom class-room in conjunction with the student's regular teacher. He will also be working with parents in the program. This program pro-gram will be developed to help individual students to become successful in learning experiences at school.
